Railway communications become 10 times faster.
KTX also enables smooth inter-train communication

SK Telecom announced on the 11th that it signed a construction contract with the Korea Railroad Facility Corporation for the 'Purchase and Installation of High-Density Wavelength Division Multiplexing Equipment for the Gunjang Industrial Complex Inflow Railway and 4 Other Projects' project.

The southern high-density wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) equipment contract that SK Telecom has recently won through a consortium with WooriNet is a project to build a railway communications network in the southern regions outside the metropolitan area, including Gwangju, Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan.

The contract period is until December 31, 2020, and the total contract amount is approximately 6.8 billion won.

DWDM transmission equipment is equipment that transmits signals by loading them onto light waves. Everything from LTE-R, an integrated railway wireless network, KTCS, a train-to-train communication, to CCTV for security and computerized communications such as train ticket reservations are all done through DWDM networks, making it an important infrastructure for railway communications.

The ROTN equipment introduced this time is the latest technology equipment from the American company 'Siena', and has the advantage of not only being able to transmit large amounts of data in wavelength units, but also being able to communicate through various detours in line units.

This project is part of the 'Railroad Optical Transmission Network Construction Plan' according to the '3rd National Railway Network Plan and Basic Plan for Intelligent Transport System', and is a project to construct a large-capacity backbone network (Southern Ring) in Seoul, Daejeon, Busan, etc., following the 'Purchase and Installation of Wavelength Division Multiplexing Equipment from Wonju to Gangneung' contracted by the SK Telecom consortium in 2016. As the national DWDM network construction operator of the Korea Railroad Facility Corporation, SK Telecom plans to expand the network by introducing it to major stations nationwide.

Communication speeds that were previously 10 Gbps based on existing wired networks have been increased tenfold to 100 Gbps, enabling safe and smooth communication between trains even on KTX trains running at over 300 km/h. In addition, LTE-R, which currently only allows radio communication between crew members, will be upgraded to multimedia services.

SK Telecom B2B Business Division Head Choi Il-gyu said, “The SK Telecom consortium has secured an optical transmission network with ultra-low latency, ultra-high speed, large capacity, and the highest stability by applying OTN switching technology, the next-generation transmission standard, for the first time to the nationwide backbone network.” He added, “SKT will continue to do its best to open the era of next-generation railway wireless communications (LTE-R).”
