Launch of three new security surveillance solutions
Strengthening real-time video surveillance data management

Modern video surveillance systems can use video and metadata to provide valuable insights for forensic analysis and behavioral prediction in a variety of fields, including consumer behavior analysis in retail, urban traffic pattern analysis in public environments, and crowd control.

Surveillance cameras and edge systems, including Network Video Recorders (NVRs), IoT gateways, and Multi-access Edge Computing nodes (MECs), are considered core components of real-time and AI-enabled systems, regardless of configuration. Consequently, demand is growing for highly reliable, enhanced storage solutions capable of operating efficiently even under harsh conditions, such as 24/7 operation.

Western Digital has announced three new storage solutions specifically designed for security surveillance systems. New solutions include UFS-based industrial embedded flash drives with 3D NAND, a new 256GB WD Purple micro SD card, and device analytics technology that supports proactive storage management.

Western Digital has announced three new solutions, including the 'Western Digital iNAND IX EU312 UFS EFD', an industrial-grade 3D NAND UFS Embedded Flash Drive (EFD) for building security surveillance systems, the 'WD Purple microSD card' series with increased capacity up to 256GB, and 'Western Digital Device Analytics', a new device analytics technology that enables OEMs and system integrators (SIs) to proactively manage storage subsystems and maintain optimal operation. This expands Western Digital's portfolio of data storage devices specifically designed for the security surveillance market.

This new solution addresses the complex and dynamic data demands of the evolving security surveillance market by delivering the high performance, large capacity, and robustness required by network-based, AI-enabled camera systems as well as smart video devices operating at the edge.

The three new solutions are as follows:

Western Digital iNAND IX EU312 UFS EFD 256GB

The Western Digital iNAND IX EU312 UFS EFD is optimized for edge camera and smart video applications, boasting industrial-grade durability, high capacity, and the fast speed of UFS. With read speeds of up to 750MB/s and write speeds of up to 320MB/s, it supports the read- and write-intensive environments of AI-enabled video cameras and edge devices. With up to 768TBW (total write life), it provides the high endurance required for continuous recording. It also features enhanced NAND flash management firmware, including robust ECC (Error Correction Code), read refresh, wear-leveling, and bad block management.

Western Digital Purple Micro SD Card 256GB

▲Western Digital's WD Purple micro SD card is a product specifically designed for surveillance cameras, allowing the WD Purple series, known for its high performance, durability, and reliability, to be used in always-on, edge-end video surveillance cameras. Utilizing 3D NAND technology, it now offers a new high-capacity model of up to 256GB and supports up to 1,000 P/E cycles (Program-Erase Cycles). The WD Purple micro SD card family provides long-lasting, camera-mounted storage to meet the demanding workloads of AI-enabled, high-resolution professional surveillance cameras that operate 24/7. Its operating temperature range is -25° C to 85° C, and it is humidity-resistant, ensuring uninterrupted operation in extreme weather conditions and a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.

▲Western Digital's Device Analytics is a technology integrated into WD Purple HDDs, WD Purple Micro SD cards, and Western Digital IX EU312 UFS EFDs, enabling SIs and end users to proactively manage storage in security surveillance systems. Device Analytics provides a series of operational and environmental metrics to the host system, ultimately enabling users to proactively prevent potential issues. Device Analytics leverages its powerful analytical capabilities to derive deep insights, enabling system administrators and users to improve system monitoring and proactively manage storage operations to maintain optimal operation, ultimately lowering total cost of ownership (TCO).

“With the increasing adoption of high-resolution and AI-enabled cameras, traditional centralized video surveillance systems are becoming increasingly decentralized,” said Oded Sagee, senior director of product marketing at Western Digital. “Capturing, analyzing and transforming larger amounts of data locally and in real time requires fast, reliable, high-capacity storage in surveillance devices.”

At the same time, "With the announcement of this new solution, Western Digital completes its integrated security surveillance product line that spans from edge to core, ushering in a new era for building smart video and AI-based security surveillance systems," the company said.
