OpenAI has released Search GPT about two years after releasing the generative AI Chat GPT. The industry is paying keen attention to whether it can pose a threat to Google, the number one search engine market leader, by combining with Chat GPT.

On the 25th (local time), OpenAI released the prototype (test) version of its own search engine, 'Search (SearchGPT)'. It announced plans to test the service by accepting applications for the service and targeting some users.

SearchGPT was released just a week after OpenAI released its latest AI multimodal model, GPT-4o Mini.

Search GPT is an AI model that maximizes search functions. While Chat GPT generates information through conversations with users and performs tasks such as coding and document writing, Search GPT is specialized in Internet search and information provision functions to find answers to questions entered by users.

When a user asks a question using the natural language conversation feature in SearchGPT, it provides fast web search based on reliable sources. The sources are displayed together. After providing an answer, it provides feedback to the user.

OpenAI explains that SearchGPT increases user engagement with its conversational interface. Users can continue the conversation like in ChatGPT and get detailed answers through follow-up questions.

In the future, OpenAI plans to integrate ChatGPT and SearchGPT.

“We think we can do search much better than we do today,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on his social media platform X.

Meanwhile, Google unveiled its search engine 'AI Overview', which is equipped with the generative AI 'Gemini', in May. However, errors have been occurring in the service, and it appears that it was recently excluded from the top placement.

In addition, domestic portal site Naver also released a search AI called 'Cue:' based on its generative AI Hyperclova X last year. The service can also be used by those who have applied for the waiting list and have a verified ID of their real name over the age of 19. It is currently available on PC, and it has announced plans to expand to mobile this year.

As the accumulation of high-quality data is key to the most effective use of search AI, it is expected that the key will be whether Search GPT has the weapons to threaten the positions of Google and domestic portals.
