UNIST STEM Camp, 60 1st and 2nd year students from Ulsan High School attended
The UNIST STEM Camp successfully concluded with a graduation ceremony on the 5th. In this camp, 60 first and second year students from 25 high schools in the Ulsan area participated and had time to create self-driving cars, drones, robots, etc.
The UNIST STEM Camp was established to provide experiential education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to future talents who will lead the 4th industrial revolution era. The program, which was previously operated for science high schools nationwide, has been expanded to general high schools in the Ulsan area for the first time this year.
The camp was held on the UNIST campus from July 31 to August 5. Participating students performed practical project assignments on topics such as autonomous RC cars, automobiles, artificial intelligence, drones, six-legged robots, and big data. Through the eight-week online theoretical classes conducted in advance, they acquired the knowledge to create drones, autonomous cars, etc.
In particular, on the 4th, a place was set up to reveal the final results to the public through YouTube broadcast. At this place, students presented the self-driving cars, drones, robots, and app designs they had created themselves. The video of the 4-day demonstration can be viewed again on the Leadership Center YouTube channel.
Jeong Ju-hwan, a student from Gangnam High School who participated in the camp, said, “I’ve dreamed of becoming an automobile engineer since I was young, and it was a great experience to be able to build a car myself.” He added, “I made good friends, and I was satisfied with the special activity program and mentor lectures, so I definitely want to participate again.”
The UNIST Leadership Center is operating various youth experience programs in cooperation with local governments to foster science talents in the Ulsan region. Representative programs include the ‘Hi-Leader Camp’ and the ‘Dream Science Camp’ operated by Ulju-gun and Buk-gu respectively. A mentoring group consisting of UNIST students is being operated so that participating middle and high school students can receive professional guidance.
“I was surprised by the students’ level and passion,” said Young-Seok Lee, a mentor from UNIST’s Department of Mechanical Engineering who guided the participating students. “It was a rewarding time to be able to use the specialized knowledge I learned at school to help my younger peers.”
