62% of South Korean Adult Men and Women “Want to Buy a Fully Autonomous Car”

Even as car sharing services proliferate, 62% still own their own cars


An interesting result was obtained, with 62% of respondents saying they would purchase a Level 4 or higher vehicle that does not require manual driving when fully autonomous vehicles become popular.

Elimnet Now & Survey announced the results of a survey conducted from February 24 to March 3 on 1,505 Korean men and women (819 men and 686 women) in their teens to 60s on the topic of the state of self-driving in Korea.

When asked how often they usually drive, the most common response was more than 5 times a week, almost every day (49%), followed by 3-4 times a week (22%), 1-2 times a week (19%), and less than once a week (11%).

When 1,126 car owners were asked about the biggest drawback they felt when driving, 40% of them responded that vehicle maintenance costs were the biggest burden, followed by ▲risk of accidents (24%), ▲effort to maintain the vehicle (18%), ▲difficulty in parking (10%), and ▲traffic congestion (8%).

On the other hand, the advantages felt when driving a car were ▲excellent accessibility 53% ▲time saving 27% ▲excellent ride quality 13% ▲difficulty in parking 10% ▲traffic congestion 8%, in that order. />
The purpose of driving a car was surveyed as ▲commuting 54% ▲household use such as shopping 29% ▲leisure/travel 8% ▲business use 7%.

When asked whether they would be willing to dispose of their own vehicles if car sharing services became widespread, the percentage of those who answered no (62%) was higher than the percentage who answered yes (38%).

Car owners showed a variety of responses, with the majority feeling that their daily driving was ▲normal (47%), followed by ▲enjoyable (37%), ▲annoying (10%), ▲very enjoyable (4%), and ▲very annoying (1%). As a result, the number of respondents who felt that driving was enjoyable (41%) was more than three times higher than the number of respondents who felt that driving was difficult (11%).

When a total of 1,505 respondents were asked what they would choose if fully autonomous vehicles became popular and the price became the same, the results were in the following order: ▲autonomous vehicles (62%), ▲regular vehicles (30%), and ▲public transportation (8%).

When a panel of 203 people (87 men and 116 women) who had driver's licenses but did not own a car was asked about the biggest reason for not owning a car, the most common answer was ▲the burden of the cost of purchasing a car (45%), followed by ▲the cost of maintaining a car (32%), ▲the risk of accidents (11%), ▲difficulty in parking (6%), ▲traffic congestion (4%), and ▲the effort of maintaining a car (2%).

Looking at the panel composition of this survey, car owners (including owning, leasing, and renting) accounted for 75%, with 1,126 people (676 men, 450 women), while non-car owners accounted for 25%, with 379 people (143 men, 236 women).

Among the respondents who did not own a car, 203 (87 males, 116 females) or 54% had a driver's license, and 176 (56 males, 120 females) or 46% did not have a driver's license. The overall confidence level sampling error was ±2.53%p.
