Chinese battery maker grows fast, CATL ranks first
LG Energy Solution slows down, SK On grows 141.3% While China is showing strength in the ranking of global electric vehicle (EV, PHEV, HEV) battery installations sold from January to April 2022, three Korean companies also ranked in the top 10.
According to a survey by SNE Research, Chinese company CATL ranked first with a 33.7% share of the cumulative global electric vehicle battery usage in 2022, overwhelmingly beating out second-place LG Energy Solution with 14.9%.

In the global market, Chinese battery manufacturers are leading the market growth, led by CATL and BYD.
Most Chinese manufacturers have increased their market share, and CALB, which has continued to grow rapidly in 2022, has surpassed Samsung SDI to rank 6th in the world.
Among the three Korean companies, except for SK On, both companies saw their market shares decline.
SK On's market share rose from 5.3% to 7% thanks to growth, but LG Energy Solution's share plummeted from 22.9% to 14.9%.And Samsung SDI also decreased from 5.8% to 4%.

Looking at global battery usage in April, SK On grew 137.5% year-on-year and had an 8.2% market share, while Samsung SDI grew 25.9% year-on-year and had a 4.7% market share.
For SK-On, the increase in sales of Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 helped increase its market share, while for Samsung SDI, the increase in sales of BMW i3, iX, and PIAT 500 had a positive impact.
On the other hand, LG Energy Solution recorded a -26.6% growth rate compared to the same period last year due to a decrease in sales of Tesla Model 3 and Y in Europe, handing over the second place to BYD, which recorded a 233% growth rate.
CATL and LG Energy Solution saw their growth rates decline compared to the previous month due to disruptions at Tesla factories caused by the Chinese lockdown, but they are expected to soon recover to their previous trajectories.
