Priority for building autonomous driving demonstration zones
Concurrent construction of 3D high-precision stereoscopic maps
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) is gradually promoting the construction of high-precision road maps, which are essential infrastructure for autonomous driving, and is increasing the usability of map data by opening it to the private sector.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the 'Mobility Innovation Roadmap' on the 20th and stated that it will expand the construction of high-precision road maps targeting major roads and urban areas nationwide by 2030 and also promote a real-time update system.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will first build it in stages, starting with roads where autonomous driving is expected to take priority by 2030, and then targeting major roads and urban areas across the country.
The plan is to gradually expand to national roads (expressway construction) by 2022, provincial roads with four or more lanes by 2025, and nationwide roads by 2030. In order to ensure that there are no disruptions in the verification support, the autonomous driving pilot operation zone will be built as a top priority by 2025.
A pilot project is underway to build a system using high-resolution aerial photography in addition to a mobile mapping system (MMS) depending on road characteristics such as urban areas with many obstacles, and a high-precision 3D map of facilities such as tunnels and bridges is also being built in parallel to implement digital twins.
We are also focusing on developing a real-time update system, which is an important technology for precision maps.
A system that updates map data at the time of road change detection using personal vehicle sensors, road registers, etc. will be implemented within one month of 2023.It is built to enable real-time updates for up to 30 years.
In addition, we support the opening of map data to the private sector so that it can be utilized in various ways.
Data will be available both offline and online, and will be produced and distributed in various formats (e.g. OpenDrive) starting in 2024.
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong emphasized, “In the mobility era, the focus of all policies should be on whether they can produce innovative results that can be felt by the general public and companies who are the policy demanders,” and said, “The government will focus all its capabilities to support this without a hitch so that future mobility, such as fully autonomous vehicles, can be realized in the daily lives of the people during my term in office and so that our companies can lead the global market.”
Meanwhile, e4ds news is hosting a webinar titled '2022 e4ds Automotive Tech Concert' on the topic of precision road maps, one of the important keywords in the mobility innovation roadmap.
This webinar series, which will be held live every Friday morning in October, will debut on October 7th and will feature Hyunjin Park, Group Leader of Moray SW Module Group, as the featured speaker.
