Improving electric vehicle battery range, efficiency, safety, and lifespan
The solution will be demonstrated at this year's Munich Electronica. NXP Semiconductors is showcasing a battery management system that can improve battery state-of-health (SOH) and state-of-charge (SOC) estimation for improved efficiency, lifespan, and cost with an AI-based digital twin cloud service.
NXP announced on the 14th that it has developed a solution that can utilize AI-based battery digital twin by connecting high-voltage battery management systems (HVBMS) to the cloud through the S32G GoldBox vehicle networking reference design.
NXP leverages Electra Vehicles' EVE-Ai 360 Adaptive Controls technology to unleash the power of digital twin models in the cloud.
This allows for real-time prediction and control of the physical BMS, improving battery performance and health by up to 12% and enabling new applications in various fields, including electric vehicle vehicle management.
NXP will demonstrate the solution at this year's electronica in Munich.
The battery digital twin adapts to the continuous changes in battery condition based on operating conditions and provides updated figures to the BMS to continuously improve control decisions.
sunOur technology allows automakers to provide drivers with insights such as range and speed recommendations, while adaptive battery control can improve battery performance and safely extend its lifespan, reducing warranty costs for automakers.
It can also be used to manage electric vehicle fleets, providing drivers with crucial insights such as vehicle charging times and battery predictive diagnostics.
Battery management centers can use this in-depth information to reduce downtime through rapid diagnostics, and electric vehicle charging station operators can effectively optimize charging services and energy efficiency.
As the electric vehicle market grows, the supply of second-life batteries is also expected to increase.
Even after reaching the end of their useful life for automotive use, batteries still have up to 80% of their remaining capacity.
Utilizing the remaining useful life (RUL) of a battery in a home energy storage system (ESS) can reduce energy costs.
Electra Commercial Vehicle's AI-powered battery digital twin solution boasts high performance thanks to highly accurate sensors, real-time closed-loop control of the BMS, and network connectivity combined with predictive algorithms.
The solution consists of three components:
The first element is NXP's S32K3-based HVBMS Reference Design, which provides high precision and accuracy to safely extend battery life.
By precisely measuring the battery's State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH), you can maximize the battery's potential and maximize driving range through accurate diagnosis.
The second element is NXP's S32G-based vehicle networking processing solution.
NXP Gold Box is Provides secure, high-performance computing capacity and real-time network performance through secure cloud connectivity for data-driven, cloud-based automotive services.
The final element of the digital twin solution is responsible for implementing the EVE-Ai adaptive digital twin and seamlessly delivering electrification solutions to the cloud.
To achieve this, NXP is partnering with Electra Commercial Vehicle, a leader in AI-based onboard battery control, data analytics, and design.
“NXP contributes to digital twin technology with high-performance in-vehicle processing, services, and secure connectivity to the cloud for over-the-air updates,” said Andreas Schlapka, general manager and division manager of NXP Semiconductors. “This allows us to address not only the rich data in electrification solutions that require purification and appropriate feature selection, but also the changing use cases that require model selection and adaptive training.”
“At Electra, we have always focused on using a software-first approach to solve the most pressing challenges in the EV battery industry: range, life and safety,” said Fabrizio Martini, co-founder and CEO of Electra Commercial Vehicles. “NXP has solidified its position as the perfect partner, providing state-of-the-art, integrated hardware that positions us as a leader in BMS digital twin and cloud-connected technologies for electrification.”
