Smart road solutions applied to 202.6km of major roads with 289 intersections
AI-based mobility technology to solve traffic inconveniences and lead the evolution of transportation services

KT announced on the 13th that it has built an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and the largest traffic information center in the Honam region in Gwangyang City.

Gwangyang City, a representative industrial city in Jeollanam-do, will be able to respond promptly to various traffic issues occurring on the road based on AI technology through the establishment of KT's ITS, and the newly relocated traffic information center will serve as the Gwangyang Bay integrated center.

In addition, KT and Gwangyang City laid the foundation for the second and third ITS projects through this project.

In this project, KT applied solutions for smart roads such as ▲ smart intersections ▲ parking information systems ▲ online signal controllers ▲ intersection surveillance CCTVs ▲ emergency situation management systems to 289 intersections and a 202.6 km section of major roads including Gwangyang Port and Gwangyang Steelworks.

In addition, by applying a vehicle detection system, a left-turn sensitive signal system, an electric road sign, and an emergency vehicle priority signal service, the golden time for Gwangyang City emergency vehicles transporting fire patients was secured, and the accident handling time was shortened.

KT also utilized its self-developed transportation DX solution in the Gwangyang ITS project.

The solution applied by KT is KT RoadSense, an AI traffic image analysis solution.se) and KT RoadTwin, an AI traffic optimization prediction analysis solution.

KT Road Sense uses AI image detection technology and traffic data analysis to collect information on road conditions through the Vehicle Detection System (VDS) to identify traffic conditions by minimizing shadows.

KT processes information collected from roads in Gwangyang City using KT Road Sense to provide signal optimization services and accident risk prediction services.

KT has been utilizing KT Road Sense in local government ITS and C-ITS (Current-generation Intelligent Transport System) projects in Ulsan, Seongnam, etc. In particular, KT Road Sense received the highest rating in all three evaluations by the Korea Institute of Construction Technology: ITS emergency situation detection, license plate recognition, and vehicle detection.

KT Road Twin virtualizes actual road and traffic conditions and optimizes vehicle flow at intersections through AI deep learning analysis of optimized signal cycles.

It also provides traffic accident risk prediction information using information such as △lane △past accident history △speed △traffic volume △weather, etc.

In particular, KT Road Twin has proven the effectiveness of increasing the average traffic volume through an intersection by up to 8% with the optimal traffic signal derived by AI in the Bucheon City ITS project.

Meanwhile, starting with Jeju in 2018 and up to Gwangyang this time, we have acquired unrivaled nationwide No. 1 coverage and business execution experience in ITS and C-ITS.

KT plans to utilize this know-how to further develop AI-based transportation DX technology and expand the transportation social safety net.
