Smart+ Building Activation Roadmap Announced… Construction Industry Sales Expected to Generate 12 Trillion Won
Promoting benefits of relaxing the floor area ratio and building coverage ratio to fulfill the role of mobility-friendly infrastructure
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) announced that it will actively promote the Smart + Building Activation Roadmap in order to proactively respond to smart building-related technologies that are still in their infancy but are expected to grow rapidly.

On the 19th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the 'Smart+ Building Activation Roadmap' as an innovation policy in the space sector to secure national growth momentum and realize smart happiness for the people through architectural convergence innovation in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has established a roadmap for activating smart + buildings that add smart technology to buildings by operating an alliance (starting in February 2023) with Minister Won Hee-ryong and Professor Ha Heon-goo of Inha University as co-chairs and 65 institutions from industry, academia and research participating.

Smart technology is expected to rapidly advance in the future and the market size is also expected to grow rapidly, but the global market is still in its infancy.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport analyzed that if the golden time is missed due to delays in social acceptance, there is a concern that advanced countries with superior capital and original technology will monopolize the domestic market, so there is a need for preemptive response.

To this end, a public-private collaboration model must be established in which the public and private sectors can work together to discover diverse business models and accumulate experience, and jointly share the costs and risks of challenges that private companies face in the initial stages.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport derived a roadmap after collecting opinions following the launch of the Smart + Building Alliance, and included the following: △providing various pilot projects and tasks in the public sector to derive business models, △actively accepting and promoting them at the government-wide level, such as regulatory reform, incentives, and human resource development, and △the government playing tangible and intangible roles when advancing into global emerging markets and traditional friendly countries.

According to the roadmap, in order for buildings to serve as mobility-friendly infrastructure in line with the era of mobility such as urban air mobility (UAM), autonomous driving, and smart logistics, construction standards will be established and benefits for relaxing the floor area ratio and building coverage ratio will be granted.

In response to continuously evolving technological changes, we are also advancing architectural design, construction, and maintenance technologies, and developing a building platform that integrates and manages various technologies.

In particular, we plan to sign an MOU for joint research on applying smart + buildings to Seoul Express Bus Terminal, Gachon Gil Hospital, and Goyang City-Seodaemun-gu Office Building with 28 organizations from the Smart + Building Alliance and explore actual implementation methods.

After the roadmap announcement, a roundtable on smart + building innovation was held with startups and young people.

In this space, we present smart + building construction ideas proposed by college students. We plan to discuss the smart + building industry ecosystem construction plan proposed by Awa Startup and promote innovation in the construction industry, such as creating high-quality jobs for young people, based on this.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong said, “The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will actively work to expand pro-mobility, pro-logistics, and pro-environment smart + buildings so that the public can experience the results of the 4th industrial revolution, such as UAM, autonomous driving, and robots, in their daily spaces.”
