Received a contract for a 14 billion won ITS construction project… Introduction of smart intersections
AI location analysis platform provides traffic information without blind spots
SKT is building an ITS-based advanced transportation system in Seongnam City.
SKT announced on the 21st that it has won a bid for the Seongnam City Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) construction project and will construct an advanced transportation system for future mobility innovation in Seongnam City by July 2024. The scale of this project is 14 billion won, and it will be carried out with national support from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Seongnam City's own budget.
The SKT consortium, which was selected as the business operator through a competitive bidding process in August, was selected. The Seongnam City ITS construction project included the following: △construction of a smart intersection system, △replacement of aging road signs (VMS) and traffic information collection devices (VDS), △replacement of the parking system and construction of an integrated parking platform, and △upgrading of the integrated situation room system.
In this project, a smart intersection system will be built for 288 of the approximately 754 signal intersections in Seongnam City to collect real-time traffic volume information.
The 'smart intersection system' is an essential system that serves as the basis for 'smart signal operation', which collects traffic volume in real time by installing detectors within intersections and controls signals according to traffic volume. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport analyzed the operational effectiveness of the 'smart signal operation system' installed nationwide and confirmed that the average delay time was reduced by 41%.
The SKT consortium said, “We are introducing the nation’s first radar-based smart intersection system, which can collect precise, detailed location information on individual vehicles, such as traffic volume and lane information.” They plan to prepare for creating a safe autonomous driving road environment and to enhance the integrated situation room system that can monitor road conditions in real time.
For intersections where it is difficult to build a smart intersection system, SKT’s AI-based location analysis platform (LITMUS) provides data on traffic volume and citizens’ movement patterns. SKT said, “We will complete a traffic information collection system without any blind spots throughout the city and build an advanced transportation system that can respond to changes in future mobility demand in Seongnam City.”
Kim Kyeong-deok, head of SKT Enterprise CIC, said, “We plan to actively utilize SKT’s communication data and AI technology to solve increasingly serious traffic problems and actively cooperate with Seongnam City for future mobility innovation.”
