“Watch out for Foxconn electric cars” Foxconn, Aiming for Electric Vehicle Foundry Form… Diversifying Platform-Based Design and Algorithms
Mid-size electric SUV Model C, high-quality exterior design, interior display, etc.
Although electric vehicle sales have been slowing down since the end of last year, the use of zero-emission vehicles such as electric vehicles will become mandatory in the future.
Because automobile emissions play an important role in global warming gas emissions.
Recently, global manufacturers are making efforts to highlight the advantages of electric vehicles, which have recently become less cost-effective.
In particular, efforts are being made to lower the prices of electric vehicles while improving their quality.
Starting with Tesla, Chinese electric car manufacturers are starting to lower their electric car prices in earnest, and Hyundai Motor Group is also making efforts such as releasing price-competitive mass-market models and freezing prices for new cars.
On the other hand, it is estimated that it will take about 3 to 4 years for electric vehicles to take the lead through these efforts.
The trend of electric vehicles in the global market is leading future mobility. In terms of helping others, it is becoming more active.
At the recent Beijing Motor Show, many new electric vehicles were exhibited in a bid to take the lead, and the same goes for the Taiwanese show.
As the Chairman of the Korea Electric Vehicle Association, I was invited to the Taiwan E-Mobility Exhibition and participated in the opening ceremony and exhibition.
It was a meaningful exhibition in that it covered all aspects of mobility, from future mobility such as electric vehicles, batteries, and chargers to tuning of existing internal combustion engine vehicles and various parts.
Although it accounts for about half of our market, it is centered around foundry semiconductor companies such as TSMC and Foxconn, which manufactures Apple iPhones.
It also has significance as a market that understands the technical know-how of electrical and electronic systems and the trends of advanced markets.
In particular, there were many products with a higher level of completion than expected, such as the installation of a 720KW ultra-fast charger.
The product line that impressed me the most was Foxconn's electric vehicles.
First of all, the Model C electric vehicle currently on the market is a mid-size SUV, and a highly complete model was exhibited, including the exterior design and various interior displays.
Also on display was the Model B, which is scheduled to go on sale starting in December, which could be considered another electric vehicle in the form of a compact CUV.
The quality and design were of a high standard, and the detailed finishing was also of a high standard.
A multi-purpose electric pickup truck was on display next to it, and it was even more impressive because it was full of elements that would make it popular even if it were sold right away.
Although only three models were on display at this booth, the fact that electric vehicles comprised of various product groups were produced shows that they are not simply experimental models.am.
In addition, various battery samples were placed there for internalization of the battery.
It was also impressive that the company was rushing to internalize three types of future batteries, including the next-generation LFP battery and lithium metal battery.
Of course, it can be said that the fact that the entire process based on electric vehicles, including not only the electric motorcycle but also the charger, is being constructed in-house is also a major achievement.
The future electric vehicle that Foxconn is pursuing is the so-called 'electric vehicle foundry' that creates an electric vehicle with a thousand faces by changing the algorithm and covering it with a basic electric vehicle platform.
One of the areas I have always emphasized is the 'future mobility foundry' that produces various electric vehicles on an order basis centered on an open platform.
If you order the electric car you want from Apple or Google and apply your company's specialized algorithm to it, a new electric car will be born and become a differentiated model.
This could be said to be a future mobility that includes autonomous driving algorithms, including recent generative artificial intelligence.
The company that I believe is clearly designing the future mobility flow is Taiwan's Foxconn.
One of the groups I had several meetings with during this visit was a consortium called Mobility In Harmony (MIH).
This organization is an organization that aims to create an open platform for electric vehicles, and is comprised of about 800 Taiwanese companies, led by Foxconn, who share roles and create synergy.
This is a Taiwanese version of an industry-academia-research group that the Taiwanese government actively supports to lead future mobility, and includes China's CATL and LG Energy Solution.bsp;.
The effects are starting to show, and the highly finished electric vehicles mentioned above are starting to appear in the market in earnest.
For example, the exterior design and chassis of electric vehicles are carried out by a registered specialized company, and the electrical and electronic fields are also divided, and the overall coordination, including various tests and trials, is done by Foxconn.
This is a model that we should pay attention to in the future.
Recently, the news that Apple was giving up on producing the Apple Car became a hot topic in the global market.
Of course, Apple was aiming for an Apple Car that includes Level 4 autonomous driving technology, but given the urgent need for production of a generative AI phone, it is deploying around 2,000 researchers to the AI field.
Of course, rather than giving up on the Apple Car that has been studied for the past 10 years, there is a strong view that it is a postponed concept to re-enter the market while observing the technological maturity.
From the perspective of Foxconn, which already produces iPhones on contract for Apple, there was no need to have someone else produce them in a situation where the concept of an electric vehicle foundry may be emphasized in the future.
In other words, the logic was to build a foundation where Foxconn could directly produce all electric vehicles, including the Apple Car, which would drastically change the global world.
In other words, Taiwan has a dream of becoming a leading country that can lead future mobility.
Foxconn's electric vehicles are currently only sold in Taiwan.
Although it was not possible to see it at a global exhibition due to the lack of an opportunity to see it from the outside, it seems that Foxconn's powerful electric vehicles will make a splendid appearance in the global market in the future. />
After seeing these scary strategies at this exhibition, I hope to keep an eye on Foxconn’s electric vehicles in the global market in the future.
In the future, our strong competitors may not only be China or Tesla, but also Foxconn.
I also hope to have another opportunity to participate in the Taiwan exhibition and confirm the level of technology and quality.
