Discuss cooperation on expanding clean power using carbon-free energy and expanding carbon reduction technology
The market for power facilities such as ultra-high voltage transmission networks to expand power grid infrastructure is expected to expand. At the Korea-US Energy Ministerial Meeting, South Korea and the United States explored ways to strengthen cooperation to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy security, and discussed ways to cooperate in the international community on decarbonization of the industrial and electric power sectors.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that Minister Ahn Deok-geun visited Washington D.C. on the 7th and 8th (local time) and met with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Glenholm to hold the 'Korea-U.S. Energy Ministerial Meeting.'
The two countries agreed to establish a public-private partnership to maintain cooperation channels, and also discussed holding regular ministerial-level energy policy dialogues and public-private forums on clean energy.
Since the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the United States, companies from both countries in the fields of batteries, energy storage, hydrogen, and renewable energy have been actively exchanging and seeking opportunities to expand their businesses. In addition, with the market for power facilities such as ultra-high voltage transmission networks for power grid infrastructure expansion in line with plans to expand renewable energy such as offshore wind power, the regular cooperation channels between the two countries are expected to become more meaningful.
In addition, Minister Ahn shared that Korea, as the 2025 APEC chair, is reviewing the plan to 'expand clean electricity in the APEC region through the use of carbon-free energy technologies such as nuclear power, renewable energy, and hydrogen' as a key agenda. And asked for the attention and support of the United States.
They also discussed ways for the international community to cooperate on sustainable future fuel utilization for decarbonization of the industrial sector, carbon capture and storage, and carbon removal technologies for carbon reduction.
Minister Ahn Deok-geun said, “As the establishment of a stable clean energy supply chain between countries in similar positions intensifies, the strategic and comprehensive clean energy partnership between our allies, Korea and the United States, is more important than ever.” He added, “Through the strong Korea-U.S. alliance, I hope to contribute to responding to the global climate crisis, establishing a stable energy supply chain, and strengthening energy security, while the cooperation platform between the two countries will discover business cooperation opportunities between companies and become a stepping stone for expanding investment and leading the global clean energy market.”
