과학기술정보통신부는 2027년에 개최될 세계전파통신회의(2027 World Radiocommunication Conference, WRC-27)에 체계적으로 대응하기 위해 한국 세계전파통신회의 준비단을 19일 발족했다.
Preparing for the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27) to be held in 2027
Discussions on securing 6G frequencies, satellite services, and space safety
The Ministry of Science and ICT takes the first step toward securing 6G frequencies.
The Ministry of Science and ICT launched the Korean World Radiocommunication Conference Preparation Team on the 19th to systematically respond to the 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27) to be held in 2027.
The World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) is a conference hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that decides on important matters related to global frequency allocation and radiocommunications. It is held every four years and is attended by 193 countries.
The newly launched 'Korea WRC-27 Preparation Group' consists of approximately 60 people (30 organizations) from industry, academia, research, and related ministries (Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, etc.) centered around the Ministry of Science and ICT. The preparation group plans to secure domestic radio resources at international conferences and support international standardization of related technologies through analysis of major agenda items of WRC-27 and research activities.
The Korean WRC-27 Preparatory Committee is composed of a steering committee and five agenda study groups in line with the ITU's WRC-27 study system. The Steering Committee and each agenda research group will prepare response strategies for analyzing domestic and international research trends for each WRC-27 agenda, writing national contributions reflecting opinions from various sectors, and promoting cooperation between countries.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT has achieved results, such as having the 6G candidate frequency proposed by Korea adopted as an agenda item at the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23) held in 2023. At WRC-27, preparations are being made to secure technologies such as securing 6G mobile communication frequencies and new service agendas using satellites.
Choi Byeong-taek, director of the Radio Policy Bureau who is in charge of the Korean WRC-27 preparatory committee, said, “The upcoming WRC-27 will not only involve securing frequencies for 6G mobile communications and next-generation satellite communications, but will also involve extensive discussions on frequencies in areas directly related to the safety of the people, such as space radio disasters and sea surface temperature measurement. Therefore, the preparatory committee will do its best,” adding, “By continuing to understand international technology trends and make efforts to protect the radio environment through the preparatory committee, we will ensure that our country can produce meaningful results at WRC-27.”
