STMicroelectronics today announced that it has expanded its STSPIN32 programmable motor controller/driver family with the introduction of the STSPIN32F0B System-in-Package (SiP) for cost-effective single-shunt current sensing.
STSPIN32F0B

The STSPIN32F0B integrates a single operational amplifier for current sensing, eliminating the need for individual 3-phase BLDC coil-current sense resistors and making extra I/O pins available for user functions.

The new SiP contains a 48MHz STM32F031x6 MCU capable of executing a 6-step motor-control algorithm as well as other application-level functions (FOC & sinusoidal).

The STSPIN32F0B provides easy access to the MCU's internal features, including up to five general-purpose timers, a 12-bit ADC, and a temperature sensor, via its 20 GPIO pins. It also provides I2C , UART, and SPI ports.

To power the motor, the STSPIN32F0B SiP includes a triple half-bridge gate driver capable of supplying up to 600 mA per channel to external MOSFETs.

A 3.3V DC-DC buck converter and a 12V low-dropout (LDO) regulator also provide the voltage rails to power the MCU, gate drivers, and external components, further reducing bill of materials and improving overall system efficiency.

It also features a bootstrap diode that implements a reliable start-up and protection mechanism, ensuring robust operation even in demanding industrial applications.

Real-time programmable overvoltage protection and cross-conduction/shoot-through prevention, under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and over-temperature protection for all power supplies are also included.

ST provides ready-to-use 6-step motor-control algorithms supporting sensored or sensorless BLDC control, along with a complete set of hardware, software, and firmware tools to simplify and streamline new product development based on the STSPIN32 family.

Access to the built-in STM32 bootloader enables Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware updates, increasing flexibility and lowering cost of ownership.

The STSPIN32F0B offers an extended supply-voltage range from 45 V to 6.7 V, allowing use in a wide range of products including portable devices powered by as few as two lithium polymer (LiPo) cells.

When the motor is idle, the MCU is turned on to save power and maximize battery runtime. A standby mode is available that disables all circuits other than the DC-DC converter that supplies power.

The STSPIN32F0B is currently in production in a 7x7mm QFN package, priced starting at $1,605 for orders of 1,000 pieces.
