Speeches and exhibitions available online until September 26 The Korea Display Industry Association held the '20th IMID 2021 Korea Display Industry Exhibition' at COEX Hall C in Seoul on Wednesday, the 25th. The IMID event, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, is Korea's largest display industry exhibition. At the IMID 2021 event, a total of 115 companies set up 291 booths and showcased the latest display technologies until Friday, the 27th.

Last year’s event was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s event, which was held after two years, was also held on a smaller scale. Even so, leading domestic display companies LG Display and Samsung Display caught the attention of visitors by setting up booths larger than those of other companies. Merck Electronics of Germany also attracted the attention of the industry with a booth of similar size. CEO Kai Beckmann also gave a keynote speech.
In a speech titled “The Shift in the Display Paradigm of Electronics,” Beckmann said, “Information usage is skyrocketing across all sectors,” and “In order for users to intuitively perceive this, we will need displays based on innovative material technologies in large numbers.”
LG Display unveiled its customized display solutions for daily life. Its booth was divided into ‘Home’ and ‘Auto’ zones and showcased CSO (Cinematic Sound OLED), bendable OLED, transparent OLED, high-performance gaming monitors, and P-OLED for vehicles.
In the Home Zone, an 88-inch 8K CSO panel that produces sound directly from the panel, a smart bed that combines a 55-inch transparent OLED panel and a bed were introduced. A separate gaming room for gamers was also set up in the Home Zone, welcoming visitors with ▲ a 48-inch curved CSO panel, ▲ a 34-inch curved 144Hz gaming monitor panel, and ▲ a 15.6-inch 300Hz gaming laptop panel.
At Auto Zone, an example of LGD’s P-OLED-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system for vehicles was introduced. The T-shaped, ultra-large display made by connecting four panels into one allowed for perfect black expression, high definition, and design without shape constraints.
Samsung Display showcased its booth with a forest-themed design and its non-polarized OLED product, Eco² OLED™. Eco² is a technology that eliminates the polarizing plates used in existing panels and changes the panel stacking structure to improve display performance. It was applied to the 'Galaxy Z Fold 3' product and uses 25% less power compared to existing panels.
Inside the booth, foldable OLEDs that passed 30,000 tests at -20 degrees Celsius, OLEDs that reduce harmful blue light wavelengths by 70%, OLEDs with round diamond pixel structures, under-panel camera (UPC) technology, and multi-frequency technology that increases power efficiency by dividing a single panel into two areas and driving each area at different frequencies were introduced.

In addition to these, domestic and foreign companies and institutions such as KC Tech Co., Ltd., Genius Co., Ltd., Sungdo Engineering Co., Ltd., Radiant Solution Co., Ltd., LMS Co., Ltd., NovaCentrix, Hyrox Korea Co., Ltd., Top Engineering Co., Ltd., Wonik IPS Co., Ltd., JEDEX Co., Ltd., NITECH Co., Ltd., ELDIM, Nano Convergence Technology Institute, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute participated and showcased display-related technologies, materials, and equipment.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the IMID organizing committee has limited the number of people entering the exhibition hall at the same time to 1,724, and has implemented measures such as temperature checks, hand sanitizer use, and limiting the number of people per booth. As a result, the number of visitors is estimated at 4,000, falling short of the expected number of 5,000. Unlike the stagnant face-to-face events, the non-face-to-face events have been lively. The IMID conference, which was held concurrently, was broadcast via ZOOM, allowing participation from anywhere in the world.
An online platform that virtually implements the exhibition hall has also been created and will run until September 26.
