Samsung Electronics Develops 'CXL 2.0 DRAM'

Plans for mass production within the year and advance commercialization of next-generation memory

Samsung Electronics is developing the industry's first 128GB CXL DRAM supporting CXL 2.0, raising expectations that it will overcome the limitations of DRAM modules and enable bandwidth and capacity expansion.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 12th that it has developed a 128GB CXL DRAM that supports CXL 2.0.

CXL (Compute Express Link) is a next-generation interface for more efficient use of accelerators, DRAM, and storage devices used together with CPUs in high-performance server systems.

Samsung Electronics developed the world's first CXL 1.1-based CXL DRAM in May of last year, and then developed a 128GB DRAM supporting CXL 2.0 in just one year, advancing the commercialization of next-generation memory.

This product supports PCIe 5.0 (x 8 lanes) and provides a bandwidth of up to 35 GB/s.

Samsung Electronics plans to mass-produce 'CXL 2.0 DRAM' within the year and will accelerate the expansion of the CXL ecosystem by introducing products of various capacities in a timely manner according to the demand of the next-generation computing market.

CXL DRAM is attracting attention in the next-generation computing market that requires high-speed data processing such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, as it can expand bandwidth and capacity while coexisting with main DRAM.

Samsung Electronics' 'CXL 2.0 DRAM' is the first in the industry to support 'memory pooling'It supports the 'ling' function.

'Memory Pooling' is a technology that creates a pool by combining multiple CXL memories on a server platform, and allows multiple hosts to share and use memory from the pool as needed.

This technology allows the full capacity of CXL memory to be used without any idle areas.

When customers apply this technology to their data centers, they can reduce server operating costs by enabling more efficient memory usage.

It is also expected that a virtuous cycle will continue, with the reduced operating costs being reinvested in the server's memory.

“Samsung Electronics is leading CXL technology as a Board of Director (BoD) member of the CXL Consortium,” said Choi Jang-seok, executive director and head of the new business planning team at Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Division. “We will further expand the CXL ecosystem through cooperation with global companies in data centers, servers, and chipsets.”
