1.4 times higher performance and 20% higher power efficiency than existing 24Gbps GDDR6
Samsung Electronics has developed the industry's fastest 32Gbps GDDR7 DRAM, taking the lead in the next-generation graphic DRAM market. It is expected that future applications will expand to next-generation graphics cards, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 19th that it has developed the industry's first '32Gbps GDDR7 (Graphics Double Data Rate) DRAM', which will lead the growth of the next-generation graphics market.
Samsung Electronics further solidified its technological leadership in the graphic DRAM market by developing the industry's first '24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM' last year and the industry's first '32Gbps GDDR7 DRAM'.
'32Gbps GDDR7 DRAM' is scheduled to be installed in the next-generation systems of major customers and verification will begin within the year.
This product is a 16Gb product with significantly improved high-performance and low-power characteristics, with data processing speeds 1.4 times faster and power efficiency improved by 20% compared to previous models.
Samsung Electronics has newly applied the 'PAM3 signaling method' to this product, realizing the industry's highest speed of up to 32 Gbps per data input/output pin.
'PAM3 signaling method' is a technology that can transmit 1.5 times more data in the same signal period than the existing NRZ method.
If a '32Gbps GDDR7 DRAM' is installed in a graphics card, it can process up to 1.5TB of data per second. This is a 1.4x improvement in performance compared to the existing GDDR6, which provides up to 1.1TB.
Samsung Electronics also improved power efficiency by 20% by applying low-power design technology optimized for high-speed operation. It also provides an option to support ultra-low voltage, especially for applications where low power characteristics are important, such as laptops.
In addition, Samsung Electronics applied new materials with high thermal conductivity to the EMC package and optimized the circuit design to minimize heat generation due to high-speed operation.
This reduces thermal resistance by approximately 70% compared to existing GDDR6, providing stable quality even at high-speed operations.
Samsung Electronics Memory Business Division Product Planning Team Vice President Bae Yong-cheol said, “The ‘GDDR7 DRAM’ will provide a more differentiated user experience in applications that require superior graphic performance, such as workstations, PCs, laptops, and game consoles.” He added, “We will commercialize it in a timely manner to meet the demand of the premium graphic market and continue to lead the next-generation graphic DRAM market.”
'GDDR7 DRAM' is expected to be widely used in various fields such as next-generation high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), and self-driving cars.
