Hosting access control services such as NFC mobile payments
Enhanced NFC RF performance and expanded non-volatile storage space STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a semiconductor supplier serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, has unveiled a chip that hosts a range of services, including NFC mobile payments, mobile transit ticketing, access control applications such as digital car keys, and converged services that require an embedded SIM (eSIM).
ST announced on the 20th that it has launched the ST54L, which combines an NFC controller and a secure element IC.
The ST54L enables access to secure contactless ticketing and payment services safely protected by the STPay-Mobile platform on mobile devices such as smartphones, smart wearables, and tablets.
The chip features Thales' mobile security operating system, which runs on an integrated, validated embedded security element jointly developed by ST and Thales.
The new ST54L chip offers enhanced NFC RF performance compared to previous-generation devices, while also increasing non-volatile storage by more than 50% to 3.3Mbytes.
It supports Multiple Enabled Profile (MEP), providing users with storage space with larger memory capacity, allowing them to download eSIM profiles or support multiple security applications.
The ST54L is currently in mass production and is used in the newly released Google Pixel 8.) was adopted into the phone.
The chip has been verified by several major mobile platform manufacturers, ensuring seamless integration with smartphone OEMs.
ST manufactures the ST54L chip using proprietary embedded flash technology in its own wafer fab facilities, leveraging a fully in-house supply chain.
