Visit to Samsung Electronics Philippines Plant, Emphasizes ‘Seizing Opportunity’
Electric and autonomous vehicles spread, demand for high-performance MLCCs for battlefields increases
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong personally took charge of the high-performance MLCC business for battlefields, which is seeing increasing demand due to the spread of electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited Samsung Electronics' production facility in Calamba, Philippines on the 6th to inspect the MLCC business and emphasized 'seizing opportunities.'
After discussing future business strategies with Samsung Electronics executives and personally inspecting the MLCC factory, Chairman Lee urged them to seize opportunities arising from the expansion of the AI, robot, and electric vehicle markets.
Afterwards, Chairman Lee held a meeting with executives and employees working at the Kalamba production plant, encouraging them for their hard work and listening to their concerns.
Recently, Chairman Lee has been frequently visiting Samsung Electronics' business sites in Busan, Tianjin (China), and Suwon to check the business status and spur the dominance of the high value-added MLCC market.
The Philippine production corporation, established in 1997, has been producing MLCCs and inductors for IT since 2000, but is also considering additional production of high-performance MLCCs for electric and autonomous vehicles as the electric and autonomous vehicle markets grow rapidly.
The Philippine production corporation completed the construction of the second MLCC plant in 2012, and in 2015, invested 288 billion won to expand the production line, thereby establishing itself as a key production corporation along with the Busan and Tianjin (China) production corporations. It grew into a stronghold.
Samsung plans to foster Busan as a cutting-edge MLCC specialized region leading the research and development and production of core materials for MLCCs, while operating China and the Philippines as global core supply bases for IT and automotive MLCCs.
MLCC is a key component that stores electricity and stably supplies the necessary amount of electricity to enable semiconductors to operate smoothly. It is used in smartphones, electric vehicles, etc. and is called the 'rice of the electronics industry.'
If the current entering the circuit is not constant, electronic products may malfunction or break down, so MLCCs act as a kind of 'dam' that supplies electricity to semiconductors consistently.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is focusing on fostering its MLCC business for battlefields as a future growth engine.
The industry predicts that the MLCC market will more than double from KRW 4 trillion in 2023 to KRW 9.5 trillion in 2028, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics is continuously expanding its investment in the MLCC sector to proactively respond to future demand.
In particular, while smartphones are equipped with about 1,000 IT MLCCs, electric vehicles are equipped with 3,000 to 20,000 MLCCs for powertrains, and their prices are more than three times higher, so Samsung Electro-Mechanics is concentrating its business capabilities on MLCCs for powertrains.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has continuously expanded its local CSR activities and won the 'Best Company Award' presented by the Philippine government in 2022. The 'Best Company Award' is the most prestigious and respected award given to companies registered with the Philippine Board of Investments. Since its establishment in 2012, only five companies, including Samsung Electro-Mechanics, have won the Best Company Award.
Samsung Electronics is contributing to sustainable development in the Philippines through local CSR activities and is recognized as a trustworthy company locally.
