ON Semiconductor Unveils Square 300,000-Pixel Image Sensor

The importance of power is growing in many applications that provide still or streaming images.

ON Semiconductor announced on the 16th that it is introducing the ARX3A0 digital image sensor, which offers a 1:1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 300,000 pixels.

The ARX3A0 operates like a global shutter in various environments at up to 360 frames per second, while also possessing the characteristics of a Back Side Illumination (BSI) rolling shutter sensor in terms of size, performance, and sensitivity. Furthermore, its compact square form factor and high frame rate make it suitable not only for small auxiliary security cameras but also for the latest technologies such as machine vision, AI, and AR/VR applications.

When shooting at 30 frames per second, less than 19mW of power is consumed, and when shooting at 1 frame per second, 2.5mW of power is consumed. It enables a low-profile module in the shape of a 1/10-inch square, and can maximize the sensor field of view with a 3.5mm die.

Thanks to its small size and square shape, it can be applied to modern applications such as AR/VR goggles that monitor the eye movements of users in limited spaces without a fixed orientation.

The monochrome sensor is built on a 560 × 560 active-pixel array equipped with ON Semiconductor's NIR+ technology, providing high-sensitivity images even in situations where there is no light at all or where only light undetectable to the human eye is present.

Advanced power management features are also provided, which automatically disable low-power mode when motion or a change in light is detected on the screen. System power can be saved because the sensor is the primary power source for operating the wake function on the camera system.

As AI advances, demand for data is also being created for non-human equipment. While most image sensors have been developed with visual applications in mind, the ARX3A0 is designed for intelligent, cutting-edge systems as well as traditional viewing systems.

Gianluca Colli, Vice President and General Manager of the Consumer Solutions Business Unit at ON Semiconductor’s Image Sensor Group, stated, “AI is emerging as an essential element of vision-based systems,” adding, “The ARX3A0 was developed for a new type of machine where vision plays an essential role in machine operations.”

The ARX3A0 is available in two forms: a chip scale package and a reconstructed wafer die. Evaluation boards and prototype modules that run on ON Semiconductor's PC-based DevWare systems are available for purchase through ON Semiconductor and authorized distributors.
