The IEEE 802.3bt standard for Power over Ethernet (PoE) has the potential to transform the IoT market by enabling more sophisticated devices to be connected to larger networks.

PoE, which supports the IEEE 802.3bt standard, provides high-speed connections of up to 90W over a Local Area Network (LAN) connection. For systems including telecommunications and digital signage, it supports power supply of up to 100W.

The IEEE 802.3bt standard optimizes energy management through Autoclass, which allows a Powered Device (PD) to communicate with a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) to request a specific power supply. This allows the PSE to allocate an appropriate amount of power to each PD, maximizing available energy and bandwidth.

“PoE is one of the fastest-growing segments of the power semiconductor market today,” said Kevin Anderson, senior analyst for power semiconductors at IHS Markit. “We expect a compound average growth rate of 14 percent from 2017 to 2022.”

“The additional power supply capabilities defined in IEEE 802.3bt enable new applications such as high-power connected lighting, networked high-resolution surveillance cameras, and high-performance wireless access points,” he continued.

Forming the foundation of ON Semiconductor’s PoE-PD solutions, the NCP1095 and NCP1096 interface controllers integrate all the functions of a PoE system, including detection, auto-classification, and current limiting.

Unlike the NCP1095, the NCP1096 features built-in hot-swap FETs, offering the lowest built-in resistance of any Type 3 or Type 4 PoE controller. It has also been developed to be used with the NCP1566 DC-DC controller, the FDMC8622 single MOSFET, and the GreenBridge 4-channel MOSFET (FDMQ8203 and FDMQ8205A), which is a more efficient solution than the bridge diode in PoE applications.

Both controllers can use high-efficiency PoE interfaces up to the standard power limit of 90W, or exclusively up to 100W when higher power is required.

“ON Semiconductor is pleased to support engineers in enabling the full potential of PoE,” said Ryan Cameron, vice president of industrial and offline power solutions at ON Semiconductor. “ON Semiconductor will continue to deliver IEEE 802.3bt compliant solutions to help engineers implement a wide range of connected devices while ensuring interoperability.”
