In the UK, there were several incidents of arson targeting 5G base stations in April amid rumours that 5G radio waves could spread COVID-19.

Even aside from these extreme cases, concerns about the harmful effects of 5G waves on the human body have existed even before commercialization.

Among them, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 8th that the results of measuring electromagnetic wave exposure from 5G mobile phones and base stations all met the electromagnetic wave human body protection standards.

The selection of products and measurement results used in this measurement conducted by the National Radio Research Agency were reviewed by the ‘Electromagnetic Waves in Daily Life Committee’, which includes experts from civic groups and academia.

The SAR of 5G mobile phones was measured in actual usage environments such as voice data calls, sending large emails, and watching videos, and the results were found to be 1.5 to 5.8% compared to the standard (1.6 W/Kg).

Considering that the SAR of 5G mobile phones that were evaluated for maximum output for market launch from 2019 to June 2020 was at an average of 43.1% compared to the standard, the Radio Research Agency explained that in actual usage environments, the SAR is significantly lower than at maximum output.br />
Considering the technical characteristics of the 3.5 GHz band 5G base station that adjusts output according to usage, the maximum electromagnetic waves were measured by manipulating it to continuously download high-capacity data from a 5G mobile phone and measuring the electromagnetic wave intensity in various installation types.

The results of measuring the electromagnetic wave intensity of base stations installed in various locations, such as on building rooftops, communication poles, and underground, showed that it was at a level of 1.35 to 6.19% of the electromagnetic wave human body protection standard.

The electromagnetic wave intensity is lower when watching high-definition videos in streaming mode rather than continuously downloading large amounts of data, and the electromagnetic wave measurement value in standby mode without using 5G service was found to be less than 1% of the standard.

Measurements have not yet been made in the 28 GHz band, which is not yet commercialized.
