| 5G can quickly process large volumes of data traffic
| 7x faster than now, jointly developed with Nokia

LG Uplus announced on the 19th that it has installed the world's first 86Tbps router equipment into its Internet backbone network ahead of the full-scale opening of the 5G era.

86Tbps is the speed of processing data equivalent to 2,400 DVDs (4.3GB each), which can contain one UHD movie, in one second, and is more than 7 times faster than the router equipment used so far.

Accordingly, LG U+ has established a foundation to process large amounts of data traffic for 5G services more quickly, and LG U+ customers can now use 5G services such as AR and VR stably without delay.

5G services, which feature ultra-high speeds and ultra-low latency, require the data processing speed of router equipment that connects wireless and wired networks to quickly exchange data with servers where content such as AR, VR, and ultra-high-definition videos are actually stored.

This is the first time that a domestic telecommunications operator has applied router equipment exceeding 64 Tbps to a commercial network.

This device was jointly developed by LG U+ and Nokia and is the world's first multi-telephone developed in 2018.The FP4 processor, a Rabit network processor, was applied.

The FP4 processor can process data at a speed of 2.4 Tbps (a speed that can transmit 70 high-capacity video contents such as UHD movies per second) with a single chipset, enabling a groundbreaking expansion of data processing capacity and reduction in power usage.

In fact, this equipment is evaluated as a next-generation eco-friendly equipment as it processes seven times more data than current equipment while reducing power consumption by more than 80% compared to existing equipment.

A multi-terabit network processor is a network processor that processes Internet traffic at a terabit (1012 bits) per second. Nokia's 4th generation network processor, FP4, is the world's first multi-terabit (2.4 Terabit) network processor.

LG Uplus Network Development Manager Lee Sang-heon said, “By installing 86Tbps router equipment in the Internet backbone, we have secured a foundation for providing stable 5G services across the entire network,” adding, “We plan to continue securing the infrastructure to provide stable 5G services in the future.”

“Changes in communications are centered on evolving core networks, and we are pleased to be able to demonstrate the outstanding performance, efficiency, and stability of Nokia’s core routers,” said Taeho Ahn, CEO of Nokia Korea.
