LS Cable & System has signed a contract worth hundreds of billions of won with Nepal Telecom, Nepal's state-run telecommunications company, and will build an optical communications network in the eastern region. The construction area will include high-speed Internet and large-capacity data transmission in mountainous areas, including the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas.
The Nepalese government plans to invest approximately 200 billion won by 2022 to build a nationwide optical communication network to improve the overall poor communication infrastructure, except for some cities such as the capital.
Nepal is 1.5 times the size of South Korea, but the entire country is mountainous with an average elevation of over 1,000 meters above sea level, and earthquakes are frequent, making it difficult to build a communications network.
LS Cable & System, which emphasized its products designed to fit the natural environment and its construction capabilities, won the contract by beating out Chinese and Indian companies that emphasized their price competitiveness.
An official from LS Cable & System explained, “Our experience carrying out projects in places with frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods, such as Indonesia and Bangladesh, was highly evaluated.”
LS Cable & System is expanding its communications cable business, focusing on Asia and Europe, by recently increasing optical cable facilities in Vietnam and Poland.
It is reported that the Korea Information and Communications Association and others provided assistance in this bid by providing local market information and supporting networking activities.
LS Cable & System CEO Myung-Noh Hyun said, “We are pursuing a strategy of targeting the market by focusing on high value-added products specialized for each country and region,” adding, “We aim to strengthen our role as a wired and wireless communication network builder rather than a simple cable supplier.”
