LG Uplus announced that it has jointly developed a connected black box based on NB-IoT (Narrow Band Internet of Things) with Thinkware, Korea's No. 1 navigation/black box company, which can check vehicle impact occurrences and vehicle information in real time using a smartphone.

Existing black boxes had the inconvenience of having to replay recorded footage because it was impossible to know when a collision occurred while the vehicle was parked. Also, considering that there is a high demand for a communication-type black box service that can resolve the inconvenience of drivers only being able to check vehicle information from inside the car, LG Uplus explained that in February, it signed a business cooperation memorandum of understanding with Thinkware for 'joint development of narrowband IoT vehicle black box technology' and developed and launched a connected black box.

The jointly developed product is 'iNavi Quantum 2 Thor Edition', which implements front and rear QHD quality video, and has the Vision Blind Spot Detection (BSD) function that detects side and rear blind spots to warn the driver of danger, and 'iNavi Connected', a communication technology utilizing NB-IoT.

'iNavi Connected' is characterized by providing real-time information services about the vehicle to the driver's smartphone through a separate dongle with a built-in USIM chip connected to the black box.

iNavi Connected provides a total of four major real-time linked functions: ▲'Parking Impact Notification', which sends a real-time alarm and an image cut at the time of impact to the car owner's smartphone app to check the situation in the event of a vehicle impact while parked; ▲'Vehicle Information Display', which allows you to share vehicle information through the black box and OBD2; ▲'Remote Power Control', which allows you to check the remaining battery level and remotely control the black box power; and ▲'Vehicle Location Confirmation', which allows you to immediately check the location and time of the parked vehicle on a mobile map. It plans to gradually expand applicable models, functions, and services.

For use in communications and networks It is operated in the form of a separate 'connected package', and information services are provided free of charge for two years without a separate subscription process when using the service. After that, it will be converted to a paid service upon renewal.

LG Uplus Mobile IoT Manager Kim Young-man said, “With the launch of a black box using NB-IoT technology, it is now possible to deliver real-time information to drivers, such as impact detection and vehicle information when parking.” He continued, “NB-IoT is also expanding into various fields, such as pipeline management, parking lot management, remote metering, and electric vehicle charger management, by combining it with various sensing technologies. We will continue to dominate and expand the NB-IoT market in the future through various solutions and convergences.”

Lee Jun-pyo, executive director of Thinkware NL business division, said, “‘iNavi Connected’ and ‘iNavi Quantum 2 Thor Edition’ with the same technology are expected to further increase driver satisfaction with real-time connected functions utilizing narrowband IoT communication networks,” and added, “We plan to continuously develop leading technologies and products through future IoT-related business cooperation with LG U+.”

Meanwhile, the price of the 'iNavi Quantum 2 Thor Edition Connected Package' that provides communication services is 579,000 won for 64GB and 679,000 won for 128GB, depending on the internal storage capacity of the black box. Detailed information regarding products and sales can be found on the iNavi homepage.
