DDoS Concerns Raise as M2M Connections for IoT Grow

Cisco

Cisco Korea announced on the 15th its explosive Internet traffic growth forecast through the 2017-2022 Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) report.

According to the VNI report, the Internet Protocol (IP) traffic generated over the five-year period from 2017 to 2022 is expected to exceed the accumulated IP traffic since the inception of Internet networking up to the end of 2016.

This is because by 2022, more than 28.5 billion devices and network connections are expected to be online worldwide, 60% of the world's population will use the Internet, and video traffic will account for 82% of total IP traffic.

Domestic Internet traffic is expected to increase 2.5 times from 2017 to 2022, and the number of Internet users is expected to increase from 96% of the total population in 2017 to close to 98% in 2022.

By 2022, there will be 14.6 billion M2M connections supporting IoT applications, accounting for more than half of all global connected devices and network connections. In Korea, too, M2M modules are expected to increase to 73% of all network-connected devices by 2022, reflecting the rapidly growing trend of IoT-related industries.

As such active networking increases the use of network-related services such as SNS, e-commerce, mobile payment, big data analysis, AI, and machine learning, including IoT, individual users and companies are expected to be exposed to more cyber threats.

DDoS attacks, which cause excessive traffic to paralyze a network, are a massive threat that can account for up to 25% of a country's total Internet traffic during an attack, and the number of DDoS attacks worldwide is expected to nearly double from 7.5 million per year in 2017 to 14.5 million in 2022.

According to Cisco's latest outlook, IP networks will change in the following ways in 2022 compared to 2017:

By 2022, 60% of the world's population will be connected to the Internet

Global IP traffic increases more than 3 times
Global monthly IP traffic is expected to more than triple from 122 exabytes (EB) in 2017 to 396 EB by 2022, growing by more than 4.8 zettabytes (ZB) per year. Domestic monthly IP traffic is expected to increase approximately 2.5 times from 4.6 EB in 2017 to 11.3 EB in 2022.

By 2022, “busy hour” traffic (the 60 minutes with the highest usage during the day) is expected to be more than six times the average daily Internet traffic.

Busy hour Internet traffic is expected to grow nearly fivefold between 2017 and 2022, reaching 7.2 petabytes per second (Pbps), at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 37%.

Average Internet traffic is expected to reach 1 Pbps in 2022, an average annual growth rate of 30%, or about 4 times that of 2017.

Domestic peak hour Internet traffic is expected to increase 3.7 times from 2017 to 2022, and average Internet traffic is expected to increase 2.5 times from 2017 to reach 31 Tbps in 2022.

Global Internet Users to Reach 60% of World Population
The number of global Internet users is expected to grow from 34 billion (45% of the world's population) in 2017 to 48 billion in 2022. Domestic Internet users are expected to grow from 96% of the total population in 2017 to 98% in 2022.

Global number of connected devices to reach 28.5 billion
The number of personal computers and mobile devices and connections worldwide will grow from 18 billion in 2017 to 28.5 billion in 2022. By 2022, there will be 3.6 network devices and connections per person worldwide.

As various network devices such as smart speakers proliferate, the number of M2M lines is expected to increase from 6.1 billion in 2017 to 14.6 billion in 2022, with more than half of the devices and network connections worldwide being M2M lines. In Korea, M2M modules are expected to account for 73% of all network-connected devices by 2022.

Network speeds are more than twice as fast
The global average wired broadband speed is expected to nearly double from 39 Mbps in 2017 to 75.4 Mbps in 2022, while the domestic average wired broadband speed is expected to increase from 89 Mbps to 151.1 Mbps during the same period.

The average global Wi-Fi connection speed is expected to more than double from 24.4 Mbps in 2017 to 54 Mbps in 2022, while the average domestic Wi-Fi connection speed is expected to increase from 45.9 Mbps to 83 Mbps during the same period.

The average global mobile connection speed is expected to more than triple from 8.7 Mbps in 2017 to 28.5 Mbps in 2022, while the average domestic mobile connection speed during the same period is expected to reach 55 Mbps in 2022.

Content will account for more than 85% of total traffic
Global IP video traffic is expected to quadruple between 2017 and 2022, reaching 82% of total IP traffic. Domestic IP video traffic is expected to triple by 2022 compared to 2017, at a CAGR of 24%.

In particular, global gaming traffic is expected to increase ninefold by 2022 compared to 2017, accounting for 4% of total IP traffic, and domestic gaming traffic is expected to increase fourfold by 2022 compared to 2017, with a CAGR of 34% during the same period.

Meanwhile, as the use of VR and AR technologies increases, related traffic is also expected to increase rapidly, and the monthly average traffic is expected to increase from 0.33 EB in 2017 to 4.02 EB in 2022.

“Since 2005, when Cisco began publishing its VNI report, IP traffic has grown more than 56-fold, an average of 36 percent per year,” said Jonathan Davidson, vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Service Provider Business. “The size and complexity of the Internet continues to explode beyond expectations, and more and more users, devices and applications will be connected to IP networks.”
