XR-specific virtual content education and training support

SK Telecom is working to foster film industry talent through ‘virtual production education’ at its team studio.

SK Telecom announced on the 9th that it signed an agreement for ‘virtual production education’ with the Korean Film Council (Chairman Park Ki-yong) and virtual production specialist X-ON Studio (CEO Jang Won-ik, XON Studio). The MOU signing ceremony held on this day at the Korean Film Council Film Education Support Center was attended by officials from the three companies, including Kim Hyuk, in charge of media partnerships at SK Telecom, Park Ki-yong, Chairman of the Korean Film Council, and Jang Won-ik, CEO of X-ON Studio.

The training will last for eight weeks and cover XR (Extended Reality) at SKT’s Team Studio and ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects) and filming methods for vehicle driving scenes at X-ON Studio.

This MOU will educate film professionals on how to use cutting-edge filmmaking techniques, such as an LED wall-based virtual production studio. The course includes hands-on training on directing scenes using the ICVFX (In-Camera VFX) method and producing a short film of less than 5 minutes using virtual production.

SKT will provide the content to AI platform ‘A.Dot TV’. It was announced that it would be presented through 'TV'.

The three companies aim to have filmmakers who participated in the training experience the advantages of virtual production and introduce the technology to future film productions. They also plan to decide whether to conduct additional training sessions based on the participants’ responses after the first training session.

Kim Hyuk, in charge of SKT Media Partnerships, said, “This will be a well-structured training program that will allow participants to create video content using virtual production through theory and practice,” and “It will revitalize the virtual production ecosystem in the Korean film industry.”

Park Ki-yong, chairman of the Korean Film Council, said, “In order to enhance the competitiveness of Korean films, it is important to foster human resources who can quickly respond to the cutting-edge film production environment,” and added, “We will continue to focus on training filmmakers to enhance their cutting-edge film production capabilities.”

Jang Won-ik, CEO of X-ON Studio, said, “Through this MoU, we will create training that introduces highly applicable virtual production technology that can be applied to actual film sets,” and “We will do our best to make virtual production an important axis for the growth of the film industry.”
