STM32WLE5 LoRaWANⓡ wireless MCU supplied to Syndcon

STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor leader serving customers and applications across the spectrum of electronics, is supporting key technologies that enable smart meters.

ST announced on the 13th that it is conducting a collaborative project with Sindcon (Singapore) IoT Technology Pte Ltd (hereinafter referred to as Sindcon), a smart meter supplier headquartered in Singapore.

The project will add ST’s STM32WLE5 LoRaWAN® wireless microcontroller to Sindcon’s network of more than 50,000 water, gas, and energy meters in Jakarta, Indonesia.

“The STM32WLE5 microcontroller (MCU) supports remote metering across Jakarta’s complex and vast terrain of cities and forests, leveraging the long-range, low-power radio signals operating on the LoRaWAN network,” said Paolo Oteri, STMicroelectronics Marketing Director, APeC (Asia Pacific ex-China). “As a tiny system-on-chip (SoC), this STM32 wireless microcontroller enables customers like Sindcon to add more functionality to their smart meters without increasing their product size or form factor.”

Chen Deyu, Chief Executive Officer of Syndcon, said, “JakartaSyndicon’s smart meters are installed in residential areas including private apartments, industrial water facilities, and inside shopping malls, making metering difficult and expensive. Syndicon chose the STM32WLE5, which improves performance, size, security, and power consumption to provide customers with the benefits of more integrated features,” he said.

This project is Sindcon’s first deployment in Indonesia using ST’s highly integrated STM32WLE5CC wireless MCU, a sub-GHz wireless microcontroller with an Arm® Cortex®-M4 core running at 48MHz. The MCU features 256Kbytes of flash memory and 64Kbytes of SRAM, as well as LoRa® modulation and AES 256-bit encryption.

The new STM32WLE5-equipped meters from Syndcon feature an advanced battery management system that supports accurate remote metering for up to ten years.

The meters are currently undergoing upgrades and are expected to be installed by the end of 2023.

A demo of this product will be available at Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific (ITAP) at Hannover MESSE, Singapore Expo from 18-20 October 2023.
