저가 씨게이트(Seagate) 하드 디스크(HDD)가 중국에서 재제조된 가짜 하드디스크일 가능성이 높은 것으로 의심되고 있어 소비자 주의가 요구되고 있다.
Suspicious reports from overseas media outlets such as Tom's Hardware and Heise
Overseas direct purchase distribution at one-third of the domestic regular price
Consumers are being urged to be cautious as low-priced Seagate hard disk drives (HDDs) are suspected to be counterfeit hard disks remanufactured in China.
According to recent overseas media outlets such as Tom's Hardware and Heise, data center-grade hard drives from global hard drive manufacturer Seagate are being sold as new products, but in reality, they are used products that were used in cryptocurrency mining farms in China.
This suggests that the hard drives used originated from China and were previously used in a cryptocurrency farm that mined Chia.
During the chia mining boom, demand for HDDs skyrocketed, leading to supply shortages and rising prices, but as the economics of chia mining waned, many farms closed, flooding the market with used drives.
According to the article, these drives were sold as new with internal records tampered with to make them appear as such, with between 15,000 and 50,000 hours of use.
Seagate reportedly denied any involvement in the incident, and has reportedly launched its own investigation, providing users with a tool to determine if their drive is new or used.
Reports on this incident were made in Europe, Australia andMore than 200 cases of affected HDDs have been reported worldwide, including in China, Thailand and Japan.
Seagate Exos data center-grade HDDs that have been used for thousands of hours have been found to be brand new, and while drive usage can be tracked via SMART parameters, these parameters appear to have been reset to hide actual wear and tear.
Buyers can use FARM values to check the actual usage history of the HDD when SMART parameters are unreliable.
To do this, you must use Smartmontools application version 7.4 or later or Seagate's Seatools software.
It was also revealed that products suspected to be counterfeit are being distributed in Korea under the pretext of overseas direct purchase through online markets at one-third the price of regular products.
In the case of Seagate EXOS 16TB, genuine domestic products are sold for around 600,000 won, but suspicious products are sold for around 200,000 won under the title of “overseas direct purchase.”
Since there is no guarantee regarding the lifespan or data security of counterfeit products, domestic consumers should also be cautious about purchasing them at ridiculously low prices or through unofficial distributors.
