Actively participating in the future food autonomous driving market
World's first 5G 8K TV unveiled at exhibition booth 5G is expected to bring about innovative changes in the media and mobility sectors in 2020 as it goes beyond providing immersive media services and connects with the TV and automobile industries, which are attracting attention as next-generation devices.
▲ SKT exhibition booth <Photo = SK Telecom> SK Telecom announced that it will showcase media and mobility technologies based on 5G, represented by ultra-high speed, ultra-connectivity, and ultra-low latency, at CES 2020, the world's largest IT and home appliance show, held in Las Vegas, USA from the 7th to the 10th.
At CES 2020, SK Telecom will operate a 715㎡ joint booth with SK Innovation, SK Hynix, and SKC under the theme of ‘Evolve Towards The Future.’
Booth expanded 8 times over previous year… Mobility business accelerated SK Telecom's exhibition booth features ▲Integrated In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) ▲Road Learner with HD map update technology ▲Next-generation Single Photon LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) Technologies and services related to autonomous driving will be disclosed.
▲ SK Telecom is actively pursuing 5G-based mobility business <Image = Samsung Display> Integrated IVI is SK Telecom’s integrated vehicle entertainment system developed to allow users to easily use various content in their vehicles. Integrated IVI services are implemented through mobile navigation T map, artificial intelligence NUGU, music service FLO, OTT service wavve, and parking service T map parking.
Road Runner is a technology that applies HD map update technology and detects traffic information such as lanes, traffic lights, and traffic conditions while the vehicle is driving, and updates the existing HD map in real time. It is expected to play a key role in the implementation of autonomous vehicles in the future, as it plays a role in ensuring that the HD map, which acts as the brain of autonomous vehicles, is filled with the latest information.
In relation to this, Seoul City plans to apply Road Runner to a total of 1,700 public transportation vehicles (1,600 city buses and 100 taxis) starting in March and accelerate the C-ITS project.
The next-generation single-photon lidar is the world's first lidar prototype that combines ▲1,550 nm wavelength laser module ▲quantum sensing technology such as single photon detector ▲MEMS mirror scanning technology. It is expected to play an essential role as a sensor for autonomous driving by clearly distinguishing objects even in bad weather conditions or from a distance of 500 m.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom is introducing ATSC 3.0 multi-view service together with Sinclair Broadcasting of the United States. The technology to simultaneously broadcast two broadcast channels live on one screen will be demonstrated to the audience through a vehicle cockpit on display at the site.
5G MEC technology-based products attract attention… Diversification of ultra-low latency services Based on 5G MEC technology, SK Telecom will unveil media technologies such as ▲5G 8K TV ▲Callar (Call+AR) for Sero TV ▲5GX Multiview ▲Jump AR Aqua World ▲Watch&Play ▲ATSC3.0 Multiview, and introduce the world's first 5G 8K TV, which it has been jointly developing with Samsung Electronics since September of last year.
▲ SK Telecom has applied its 5G-based MEC technology, which is key to ultra-low latency, to various media fields. 5G 8K TV is a product that directly receives 8K ultra-high-definition video wirelessly based on SK Telecom's 5G MEC technology. By applying 8K Upscale technology using NBMP technology and next-generation codec technology, the picture quality of existing Full HD TVs, which was only at the 4K level, has been improved to 8K.
Viewers can now freely use next-generation media services such as multi-view broadcasting and AR/VR content not only on smartphones but also on TVs through SK Telecom's 5G network.
Caller for Sero TV is an application of Caller, a T phone video call service, to Samsung's Sero TV, and is equipped with SK Telecom's facial recognition-based AR technology, real-time person/background separation technology, and UHD-level ultra-high definition technology.
When a user connects a smartphone to a vertical TV, the TV body can be freely rotated horizontally or vertically like a smartphone, allowing users who are familiar with smartphones to enjoy the service more conveniently.
5G Multiview is a service that allows users to simultaneously watch up to 12 multi-channel videos on one screen, allowing users to simultaneously watch the individual screens and broadcast screens of e-sports players on their smartphones, or select and watch only the performers they want when watching performance videos.
Jump AR Aqua World is a service that utilizes SK Telecom's Interactive Cinematic AR Rendering technology to allow multiple users to simultaneously enjoy AR content by interacting with various characters underwater.
Watch and Play is a new paradigm in the gaming industry, allowing Internet game users to set spectator mode and play mode, and participate in games while watching broadcasts.
An SK Telecom official said, “We will do our best to transform into a global ICT company leading the next-generation media and mobility fields through our participation in CES 2020.”
