Samsung Electronics held the 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020' at the 'Palace of Fine Arts' in San Francisco, USA on the 11th (local time) and unveiled the 'Galaxy S20 series', the second foldable phone 'Galaxy Z Flip', and the wireless earphones 'Galaxy Buds+'.

Galaxy S20 with 5G SA support and significantly improved camera performance
The Galaxy S20 series consists of three models: the Galaxy S20 Ultra with a 108-megapixel camera and a 6.9-inch display, the Galaxy S20 with a 64-megapixel camera and a 6.7-inch display, and the Galaxy S20 with a 6.The 'Galaxy S20+' and 'Galaxy S20' are equipped with 2-inch displays.

All three models support 5G mobile communications and will support 5G standalone mode (SA). Depending on the 5G network construction environment of each country, low-frequency (Sub-6) and ultra-high frequency (mmWave) bands may be used simultaneously.

Just like Apple did when it announced the iPhone 11 last September, Samsung Electronics also emphasized the camera. More noticeable than the pixel count, which has surpassed 100 million, is the larger sensor size. Of the many factors that affect photo quality, the sensor size is the biggest.

The 108-megapixel camera sensor on the Galaxy S20 Ultra measures 1/1.3 inches, while the 64-megapixel camera sensor on the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 measures 1/1.7 inches. This is smaller than the high-end cameras on the market, but larger than the compact cameras.

In particular, the Galaxy S20 Ultra supports 'nona-binning' technology, which merges nine pixels into one pixel to allow more light to be taken in in low-light environments.

The zoom function has also been enhanced. With hybrid optical zoom, the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 can zoom in up to 3x, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra can zoom in up to 10x without any loss in image quality. Additionally, with the AI-based 'Super-resolution zoom' function, the Galaxy S20 Ultra can zoom in up to 100x, and the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 can zoom in up to 30x.

The Galaxy S20 series, which supports 8K video recording, has an anti-rotation function and AI-based motion analysis function in addition to the existing anti-shake function in the 'Super Steady' mode. Users can upload 8K videos directly to YouTube with the Galaxy S20.

Will this be a signal for the revival of the foldable phone? The Galaxy Z Flip with enhanced portability

The Galaxy Z Flip is equipped with an 'Infinity Flex Display' that uses 'Ultra Thin Glass'. This display is a Dynamic AMOLED display that has received 'Eye Care Display' certification from SGS, a Swiss verification company.

Samsung Electronics has applied a 'hideaway' hinge to the Galaxy Z Flip. This hinge is based on a dual CAM mechanism, allowing for smoother and more stable folding and unfolding, and 'freestop' folding that allows the device to be used by unfolding it to the desired angle.

Samsung Electronics collaborates with Google to provide 'Flex mode'. When the Galaxy Z Flip is unfolded and set up at a certain angle, the screen is automatically split into two 4-inch upper and lower halves, allowing users to view content such as photos and videos on the upper screen and control the corresponding applications on the lower screen. It also supports the 'Multi-Active Window' function, which allows two applications to be used simultaneously.

Even when folded, you can check the screen with the 1.1-inch Super AMOLED cover display and take selfies using the rear dual cameras. You can also check the date, time, and battery status, as well as check calls and notifications.
