Signing LOI, Creating a Safe and New R&D Ecosystem
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and LG Electronics have joined hands to establish a safe open source SW development environment and create a research ecosystem that can generate diverse ideas.
ETRI announced on the 16th that it exchanged a letter of intent (LOI) with LG Electronics for cooperation in open source-related fields.
As open source usage has become more frequent in recent years, the importance of open source risk management has increased significantly, as well as legal risks such as patents and licenses. ETRI and LG Electronics have joined forces to establish an open source compliance system and share related response experiences with domestic and foreign companies.
Specific areas of cooperation between ETRI and LG Electronics include: △Exchange of open source-related R&D technology, △Contribution to the spread of open source compliance systems and service expansion, △Cooperation in domestic and international open source-related communities, △Domestic and international open source compliance standardization activities, and △Mutual cooperation to support the discovery of open source field cooperation tasks.
This collaboration will enable both organizations to promote open innovation in open source R&D activities and help companies increase profits through safe use of open source. It is expected.
ETRI Intelligent Convergence Research Institute Director Kim Hyung-jun said, “This collaboration was made with the intention of realizing a healthy open source market ecosystem and contributing to the development of the domestic ICT industry in a situation where open source utilization is rapidly increasing. ETRI will also work harder to add innovation to the existing research and development culture.”
LG Electronics CTO Jang Moon-seok said, “LG Electronics has played a leading role since the early days of introducing open source in Korea and has fostered in-house open source developers. By creating an environment where open source can be used more safely, we will contribute to creating a SW powerhouse together with domestic open source developers.”
ETRI began responding to open source by introducing the open source software (SW) certification mark in 2008, and has been carrying out systematic open source management by establishing the first open source center among government-funded research institutes in 2017 and holding the first Tech Day among government-funded research institutes in 2020.
LG Electronics has also been playing a leading role in the open source compliance field since May by disseminating FOSSLight, a domestic open source compliance system, to the private sector as open source.
