Samsung Electronics' latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 5, have finally been unveiled. The core of this new work is a design that is faithful to functionality and usability.

Samsung Electronics held its first 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023' in Korea at COEX in Samseong-dong on the 26th and introduced new products such as the 'Galaxy Z Flip 5', 'Galaxy Z Fold 5', 'Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic', and 'Galaxy Tab S9 series'.

Notable changes in the Galaxy Z Foldable 5 series include: △ the Z Flip 5's enlarged cover display 'Flex Window', △ the 'Flex Hinge' that eliminates the gap when folding to enhance portability, and △ the 'FlexCam' for shooting from various camera angles.

First of all, the Z Flip 5 is equipped with a 'Flex Window'. It supports a much wider cover screen to provide an innovative experience and style. The 'Flex Hinge' has a changed design from the existing U-shaped hinge, and is thinner when folded, enhancing portability. The flex hinge is designed with a structure that maintains a balanced design and disperses external impact. 'FlexCam', available only on foldable devices, supports taking pictures from various angles, providing a new camera selfie and hands-free shooting user experience.

At the event, Samsung Electronics said that “durability is very important for flexible displays,” and “the design team and engineers worked together to improve the durability of the main screen by changing the shock-absorbing layer and applied a double-rail structure to the hinge.” This is to increase safety by dispersing external impact. They added that it is also stylish and designed.

All of these new models are equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 2nd generation mobile AP, which is also used in the Galaxy S23, so their performance has been upgraded by one level. The battery capacity is 3,700mAh for the Z Flip 5 and 4,500mAh for the Z Fold 5, the same as their predecessors, but efficiency is expected to be improved.

The 'Galaxy Z Flip 5' and 'Galaxy Z Fold 5' will be released in Korea on August 11, and pre-sales will be held from August 1 to 7.

The prices of the 'Galaxy Z Flip 5' and 'Galaxy Z Fold 5' have slightly increased. Based on domestic prices, the 'Galaxy Z Flip 5' is △1,399,200 won (256GB) △1,522,000 won (512GB), and the 'Galaxy Z Fold 5' is △2,097,700 won (256GB) △2,218,700 won (512GB) △2,467,000 won (1TB, Samsung.com, Samsung Gangnam exclusive).

It is slightly increased by about 50,000 won compared to the price of the previous 'Galaxy Z Flip 4' △1,353,000 won (256GB) △1,474,000 won (512GB), and is about 100,000 won higher than the price of the 'Galaxy Z Fold 4' △1,998,700 won (256GB) △2,119,700 won (512GB) △2,361,700 won (1TB). It seems that the factory price increase was unavoidable due to improvements such as changes to the display and hinge and an increase in the price of key components.

The 'Galaxy Z Flip5' comes in Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender colors. The 'Galaxy Z Fold5' comes in Ice Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream colors. Exclusive colors are also available at 'Samsung.com' and 'Samsung Gangnam.' Samsung Electronics will introduce the 'Galaxy Z Flip5' in four basic colors, plus four colors of yellow, gray, blue, and green, through 'Samsung.com' and 'Samsung Gangnam.' The Galaxy Z Fold5 will be released in three basic colors, plus two exclusive colors: gray and blue.

The 'Z Flip 5' has a cover display screen size that has increased by about 1.8 times from 1.9 inches (48.2 mm) of its predecessor to 3.4 inches (86.1 mm), or 37.9 mm. The main display is a 6.7-inch (170.3 mm) Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with the same 120Hz refresh rate as its predecessor.

Users of the Z Flip 5 can customize the phone in various ways, including the clock style, photos, videos, media player, weather, Google Finance, and 13 other basic widgets, even when the phone is folded. In addition, users can pinch the screen to open the grid-like Multi Widget View, allowing them to check and switch between all widgets at a glance.

It is also easier to contact the other party. You can check notifications, call history, and past chat history while the phone is folded, and even enter QWERTY keyboard input. Samsung Pay can also be launched immediately by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

FlexCam is a unique feature of foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Flip5 allows for a variety of uses for the camera with the Flex Window and FlexCam. Launch the camera with the phone folded and take high-quality photos with the 12MP rear camera.

You can check, delete, and save favorites using the 'Quick View' feature, which quickly previews photos taken from various angles even when the phone is folded. With devices running One UI 2.1 or later and 'Dual Preview', both the photographer and the person being photographed can directly check the shot and find the right composition.

In addition, the 'Super Steady' image stabilization function allows for stable shooting even while moving. The 'Auto Framing' function recognizes faces and automatically adjusts the shooting range to take pictures without missing anyone.

The Flip 5 is equipped with the 'Nightography' function of the Galaxy S23, allowing camera shooting regardless of day or night. The AI-powered Image Signal Processing (ISP) function corrects visual noise in low-quality images and adjusts details and colors. Up to 10X digital zoom is possible.

It can also be matched with the watch face of the 'Galaxy Watch 6 Series' that is being released at the same time. You can also match it with the separately sold accessories 'Flipsuit Case' and NFC-based 'Flipsuit Card'.

■ Z Fold 5 Thinnest design, a PC in your pocket

The 'Galaxy Z Fold 5' is the thinnest in the Z Fold series. The size of its predecessor was 67.1x155.1x15.8~14-2mm when folded, 130.1x155.1x6.3mm when unfolded, and weighed 263g. In comparison, the Z Fold 5 is 67.1x154.9x13.4mm when folded, and 129.9x154.9x6.1mm when unfolded, and weighs 253g.

That is, it is up to 2.4mm thinner when folded, 0.2mm thinner when unfolded, and 10g lighter. The main screen is 7.6 inches (192.1mm), the same as the previous model, and supports 1,750 nits of brightness, which is about 30% higher.

The Z Fold 5 has a large screen, allowing you to enjoy multitasking and entertainment at the same time. It supports many foldable-optimized features such as ‘Multi Window’, ‘App Continuity’, ‘Taskbar’, and ‘Drag and drop’.

In particular, the 'Taskbar' helps you quickly switch between apps, and has been improved to provide access to up to four recently used apps, improving efficiency. The 'Two-handed drag and drop' function has also been added. You can select the desired image from the Gallery app with one hand, open Samsung Notes with the other hand and easily paste the image, making switching between apps and screens possible. The Hidden pop-up function moves the app to the corner of the screen, allowing you to watch a video in full screen while still opening a messenger when necessary.

The separately sold 'S Pen Fold Edition' has also become thinner. At 4.35mm, it is thinner than the 7.4mm thickness of the Fold 4's 'S Pen Fold Edition'. The S Pen Fold Edition is only compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold5, Galaxy Z Fold4, and Galaxy Z Fold3 5G. A 'Slim S Pen Case' is also released.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 also supports dynamic gaming experiences and multi-game functions with improved graphics performance and AI functions. It also applies a cooling system that dissipates heat to prevent performance degradation and lag.

This new foldable phone features a thicker shock-absorbing layer and a rear display support to cushion impacts on the screen, while the IPX8, Armor Aluminum frame, and Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2 provide the protection consumers expect.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 use a wider variety of recycled materials than previous foldable models. The previous models used recycled plastic from discarded fishing nets and waste water bottles, plastic from recycled PET bottles, aluminum from recycled byproducts generated during the process, and glass from recycled glass generated during the process.

Additionally, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will support a total of four OS upgrades and five years of security updates since the product launch, allowing users to maintain the latest user experience and use the products for a longer period of time.
