14 Years Since the Appearance of Smartphones… On-Device AI is the Next Main Character
Controlling Real-World Products Through Virtual Space… Focus on Spatial Computing
In 2050, the number of people over 60 in the US will double compared to today… AgeTech market ↑ Chinese companies participate in large numbers… Efforts to discover markets to overcome economic recession Kim Hak-yong, head of the IoT Strategy Research Institute, introduced the key keywords of CES 2024 that he analyzed after visiting CES 2024 in person.
On the 25th, Director Kim Hak-yong and e4ds news held a webinar titled 'Looking Around CES 2024 with Director Kim Hak-yong' and looked into notable trends at CES 2024.
Director Kim Hak-yong selected AI, spatial computing tech, age tech, and again China as keywords.
■ On-Device AI
Kim Hak-yong, director of the IoT Strategy Research Institute, predicted that 14 years after the advent of smartphones, the paradigm could change significantly once again, centered on on-device AI.

On-device AI technology, which was in the spotlight in the early 2010s as a technology that could solve problems of cloud AI such as processing speed, privacy, and communication costs, was limited to specific purposes, but recently, on-device AI has expanded beyond the narrow scope mentioned above to include generative AI.
This will bring about a change in the business paradigm, predicted Director Kim Hak-yong.
Google began to grow rapidly by operating a marketplace called Google Play and bringing all services under its jurisdiction.
ChatGPT, a leading player in generative AI, is following the same path as Google and Apple, which dominated the market, by announcing plugins and launching the GPT Store in January.
In addition, the diversification of AI-equipped devices is likely to lead to a reduction in the role of mobile phones, and the market represented by Google Play and App Store is likely to fragment into dedicated stores such as ChatGPT's GPT Store.
Director Kim Hak-yong predicted that the world will be different from today, with AI installed in cars to control vehicles and make phone calls, and that once the on-device AI market takes hold, it will be larger than the mobile phone market.
Products that utilize generative AI and Large Language Model (LLM) technology introduced at CES 2024 include Walmart’s retail tech, Amazon Automotive’s generative AI-powered vehicles, and L’Oréal’s generative AI-based beauty tech service Beauty Genius.
<br /> ■ Spatial Computing Tech
Spatial computing is a technology that allows you to use products in the real world through virtual space anywhere.

Apple's Vision Pro is representative of this technology, but it has only reached the narrow concept of spatial computing.
Director Kim Hak-yong said, “This technology is expected to expand further and be quickly applied to automobiles and homes,” adding, “Transparent displays and projectors also need to be paid attention to.”
Transparent displays are expected to be widely used in store windows and automobiles, and various images can be created by adding displays.
Samsung Electronics' Ballie, a home service robot equipped with projector functions, can also be viewed from a spatial computing perspective.
When a person is working out at home, it can play exercise videos or display information from smart devices when asked about the state of the house.
■ Age Tech
As the aging population grows, Age Tech related products also attracted attention at CES.
By 2050, the number of people aged 60 and older in the United States will double, surpassing those aged 10 to 24.It is expected to be.

Accordingly, the market size of AgeTech is also expected to grow rapidly from USD 8.3 trillion in 2023 to USD 28.2 trillion in 2050.
At the joint pavilion set up by AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), a wearable glove-type device that controls tremors in the hands of seniors who have difficulty performing daily tasks was exhibited.
This controls vibrations, just like the noise-cancelling function of earphones kills waves coming from the outside.
Additionally, a device was introduced that reads text on a display for people who cannot read it properly due to presbyopia or other reasons.
In addition, various items were exhibited, including smart glasses with displays installed on the lenses to help with translation and a walking aid device that uses a metronome to help with walking.
■ Again China
Director Kim Hak-yong chose “Again China” as the final keyword, and reported that Chinese companies that had previously avoided participating in CES due to public sanctions are participating in large numbers in CES 2024.

China is CES 2024 will have 1,104 companies participating, coming close to the 2020 record of 1,368.
Director Kim analyzed the reason for Chinese companies' participation as one of the efforts to discover markets to overcome the economic downturn.
At CES, 90% of the Westgate exhibit hall was occupied by Chinese companies, and at the Venetian exhibit hall, 90% of the accessories section, 70% of the smart home section, and 60% of the lifestyle section were Chinese companies.
In particular, China's Hisense and TCL are showing strength in home appliances.
Hisense showcased smart home products that connect devices such as Mini LED, Micro LED, and projection TVs, while TCL focused on displays such as TVs, gaming monitors, and automotive displays.
Director Kim said, “In the U.S., where lifestyles are different from ours, TV penetration is on the rise,” and added, “We need to keep an eye on Chinese companies’ foray into the U.S. market, starting with low-cost TVs.”
In addition, CEO Kim Hak-yong selected the following keywords: △Chip makers’ entry into the mobility market, △SDV & PBV, and △wearable devices.
