100 Oaths: 11 cases this year, 151 cases total
Eleven research projects of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) were selected as the best achievements in science and technology in our country, and the institute was named as the research institute that has produced the most excellent research results for the past five consecutive years.
ETRI announced that a total of 11 research results in the fields of information and electronics, convergence, energy and environment were recognized as the best results in the '2023 National Research and Development Excellence 100' announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
In particular, among the 11 achievements, 6 outstanding achievements were produced in 5 ETRI R&D support projects and 1 basic project, and it is evaluated that the excellence of the 'institution-specific mission project' that ETRI is focusing on by concentrating its research capabilities has been proven internally and externally.
ETRI, as a research institute in charge of 6G, the next-generation mobile communication, is also gaining a reputation as a top think tank with major research results directly related to the lives, health, convenience, safety, and national defense of the people.
This year, ETRI achieved 11 excellent results out of 100 government-recommended achievements in eight fields of information and electronics, two in convergence, and one in energy and environment through expert evaluation and public verification.
The excellence achieved by the research team is a key development that ETRI is currently developing. It is our country's next-generation food technology related to national strategic technologies and digital innovation, such as artificial intelligence computing, superintelligence creativity, three-dimensional communication, hyper-realistic metaverse, and digital convergence.
First, in the information and electronics field, the following were selected: △Foreign language AI teacher (Kwon Oh-wook), △Crime prediction technology through risk pattern/sign detection (Kim Geon-woo), △Domestication of 5G small cell SW technology (Na Ji-hyun), △Development of core image understanding AI technology and demonstration commercialization in the field of citizen safety (Bae Yu-seok), △Silicon photonics technology (Lee Jun-ki), △Domestication and commercialization of color photoresist (Cho Nam-seong), △Protection of human body from electromagnetic waves of digital infrastructure (Choi Hyeong-do), △Development of core technology for 8K hyper-realistic media and successful field test (Heo Nam-ho).
In addition, in the convergence field, the names of △AI doctor Doctor AI (Seung-hwan Kim) and △Global Leading in Industrial Inspection through Innovation in X-ray Core Components Technology (Yoon-ho Song) were named.
In the energy and environment sector, the standard platform technology for the factory energy management system to promote the spread of industrial energy efficiency (Lee Il-woo) was selected.
Most of the technologies selected this time are closely related to the daily lives of citizens and are expected to lead to commercialization or technological startups, providing practical help to the lives of citizens.
Since the system was implemented in 2006, ETRI has listed 151 technologies in the information and electronics fields as excellent national research and development achievements.
This is the largest number among research institutes in our country.
The 100 Excellence Awards is a system that selects the most outstanding achievements in each field among the achievements created through national research and development projects that received government support.
This year, 854 candidate achievements recommended by government ministries were selected through appropriateness review, in-depth evaluation, and public verification.
ETRI recently developed the following technologies: △K-Guard, which provides real-time information on risks in everyday life; △The world's first 40m deep rock magnetic field communication technology; and △The core technology for thin and flexible all-solid-state batteries. We are responding to the public with world-class achievements such as the development of △95% energy-saving semiconductor packaging technology and △research on domestically produced Korean-language AI exobrain.
ETRI President Seung-chan Bang said, “Most of the technologies listed on the list of the top 100 national R&D projects are our country’s national strategic technologies. Not only have the researchers’ excellent research capabilities been recognized externally, but they have also advanced through follow-up research, and are providing great momentum for activating the industrial ecosystem through technology transfer, technology startups, and globalization.”
ETRI is the core of Korea's national science and technology and a global research institute.
Currently, we are leading the way in making our country more intelligent and developing next-generation communication technology and cutting-edge AI technology.
The technology transfer achievements made by ETRI so far alone amount to 1.1 trillion won.
The technology royalties alone for three years amounted to 167.2 billion won.
It also holds 1,077 international standard patents that lay golden eggs.
In addition, the number of start-ups and research institutes created by ETRI reaches 165.
