LG Uplus announced on the 3rd that it will begin a project to apply LTE-R to 26 subway lines 4 of the Seoul Metro in cooperation with the Korea Radio Base Station. The application section is a 31.5 km section of the main line from Danggogae to Seoul Station and Namtaeryeong.

LTE-R is a technology that optimizes LTE for use in urban railway operations. It improves aging train radio equipment (VHF type) to support efficient transmission of necessary voice, video, and data between running trains, between trains and control centers, and between maintenance personnel.

The two organizations expect that this project will greatly enhance the safety of passengers. Through the uninterrupted video signal of LTE-R, not only the control center but also the driver of the train in operation can view the platform screen from 400m before entering the station. Through this, the driver can check the safety door for any abnormalities and prevent safety accidents for passengers. CCTV footage from inside a running train can be shared with the control center and station office as well as the driver, allowing for a more appropriate and rapid response to the situation in the train.

This LTE-R can be linked with the Public Safety-LTE network, which is expected to speed up cooperation with relevant organizations in emergency situations. LTE-R adopts IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), one of the voice call methods, so it can communicate smoothly with PS-LTE of the military, police, and fire departments that use the same technology.

The integrated control management based on LTE-R is also expected to increase the efficiency of Seoul Metro’s train and station operations. The control center will be able to monitor important information such as vehicle power status even for trains moving at high speeds, so it will be able to respond to various situations more quickly, an official explained.

An IoT environment will be built in history. IoT sensors installed throughout the history will measure air quality and provide a foundation for systematically managing fine dust levels.

LG U+ and Seoul Metro will complete the LTE-R installation at all relevant stations and begin test operations around the first quarter of next year. They also plan to explore additional station development plans, such as smart stations.

Meanwhile, LG U+ has applied LTE-R to the Sosa-Wonsi Line and Seoul Subway Lines 2 and 5. It is also applying LTE-R to the Sillim Light Rail, the Korea Railroad Facility Corporation Osong Test Line, and the Wonju-Jecheon section of the Jungang Line.
