Domestic 3D Printing Industry Key Issues and 2022 Business Strategy Announcement

Formlabs, Inc., a global leader in 3D printing, is expanding its supply of high-quality, cost-effective 3D printing solutions to the digital manufacturing, dental, and medical fields in 2022.

Formlabs presented its business strategy for 2022 on the 8th along with the announcement of the major issues in the 3D printing industry this year.

Formlabs announced that it will actively expand into the domestic dental, medical, and digital manufacturing markets with high-quality and cost-effective 3D printing solutions along with material certification from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (hereinafter referred to as the MFDS) next year.

This year, the domestic 3D printing industry was still in a state of overall economic recession due to the impact of COVID-19.

In terms of utilizing 3D printing, it is limited to model making, research, and prototype use rather than producing finished products that companies can immediately manufacture and sell, making it difficult to form or expand the market.

Experts stressed that the market's revitalization lies in the diversification of utilization areas and large-scale production of customized consumer products.

Formlabs has strengthened its product lineup this year by focusing on expanding its services to various fields to revitalize the stagnant market.

The flagship printer, Form 3B, has been upgraded and made for healthcare applications, with 12 different print options to meet skin interaction and other biocompatible needs. We have expanded our services in the dental and medical fields by developing new materials such as the above.

With the launch of large-scale printers Form Wash L and Form Cure L, and Fuse 1, which feature post-processing automation technology, the company has laid the foundation for large-scale production of customized consumer parts. In addition, it is expanding its digital manufacturing market targeting various global manufacturing companies through Formlabs Factory Solutions, which enable rapid implementation of customized digital manufacturing technology for enterprises.

In 2022, the domestic 3D printing industry is expected to see active large-scale production businesses and job creation for individualized and customized products in the digital manufacturing and engineering industries, as well as in the dental, medical, and education fields.

Formlabs Korea plans to actively target the dental and medical fields and digital manufacturing, where demand is continuously increasing, with differentiated technologies such as high-quality hardware, software, and resin, cost efficiency, and post-processing automation in the domestic 3D printing market next year. First, it plans to expand the supply of safe and accurate 3D printing solutions to the dental and medical fields through two dental resins that are expected to be certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in January next year.

For areas requiring high-level expertise such as strength, flexibility, and precision, we plan to diversify our collaboration with various global ventures and domestic partners with technological capabilities. In addition, in the digital manufacturing field, we plan to focus on securing customers who can produce various finished products that can be sold immediately, focusing on Formlabs Factory Solutions.

Kim Jin-wook, CEO of Formlabs Korea, said, “As the fields of 3D printing utilization have expanded recently, Formlabs is applying and developing technologies that improve quality and cost efficiency across all products and post-processing automation technologies to respond to diverse user needs. “We are also actively pursuing the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety certification, which is recognized for its stability and reliability for domestic users,” he said. “Next year, we will accelerate the domestic supply of Formlabs solutions, which have a high share in the global dental and medical fields. In addition, in the domestic digital manufacturing industry, which is steadily growing, we plan to actively discover successful cases of large-scale production services beyond prototypes and focus on attracting diverse customers.”
