Provides faster communication speed than existing CAN standards
Operating voltage 1,000Vrms, allowable voltage 5,000Vrms
Protects 12V, 24V, 48V batteries from high voltage short circuits With the introduction of IoT and IIoT, the development of smart factories and buildings, and the acceleration of automotive electrification, insulation is emerging as an important value.
Insulation is the process of preventing electricity and heat from flowing, and it means preventing electronic devices that operate at different voltages from affecting each other. If there is no proper insulation between a controller that operates at 5V and a motor that operates at 1000V, not only will the controller and motor be damaged, but the user will also be at risk.
There are three trends in insulation technology today: robustness in high-voltage systems, reliable operation in harsh environments, and miniaturization of package and system sizes.
In line with this, Texas Instruments Korea released two types of isolated CAN (Controller Area Network) FD (Flexible Data rate) transceiver products on the 7th.

TI's ISO1042 and ISO1042-Q1 TI's recently released 'ISO1042' and 'ISO1042-Q1' isolated CAN FD transceivers provide high operating voltage and faster communication speeds than the CAN standard. Additionally, it combines the features of bus fault protection, Common Mode Transient Immunity (CMTI), and low electromagnetic emissions all in a small package.
TI's two transceivers protect low-voltage circuits and improve communication throughput in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), as well as industrial applications such as factory automation, grid infrastructure, motor drives, building automation and industrial transportation.
The main features and advantages of ISO1042 and ISO1042-Q1 are as follows:
First, the operating voltage is high. Providing an operating voltage of 1,000 Vrms and a allowable voltage of 5,000 Vrms, the two transceivers have a long life and improve system reliability.
Next, the devices are effectively protected. Both transceivers provide high DC short-circuit margin with bus fault protection up to 70 V. This allows them to protect 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V battery and power supply systems from high-voltage short-circuits.
They also have high electromagnetic immunity and low EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) emissions. ISO1042 and ISO1042-Q1 provide CMTI of 85kV/s (minimum) and high ESD protection of 8kV according to IEC test regulations. Therefore, developers can design electronic products that operate robustly even in noisy environments. In addition, both transceivers have low EMC emissions, which always maintains system signal integrity. In particular, ISO1042-Q1 meets the automotive industry standard for EMC (IEC TS62228), making it suitable for use in the field.
Finally, fast signal driving is possible in CAN-based systems. Both transceivers support CAN FD rates of up to 5 Mbps and short loop delay times of 215 ns (max), enabling faster payloads than conventional CAN.

TI Canaan Soundarapandian Insulation Products Business Unit Manager “The ISO1042 and ISO1042-Q1 extend device life and improve system reliability with the industry’s highest working voltage of 1 kVrms,” said Kannan Soundarapandian, business unit manager for isolation products at TI. “This helps reduce factory downtime and lower operating costs by better protecting low-voltage circuits.”
The ISO1042 and ISO1042-Q1 are available now from the TI store and authorized distributors. Each is available in basic and reinforced isolation versions, in 10.3 mm x 7.5 mm 16-pin or 5.8 mm x 7.5 mm 8-pin SOIC packages. Pricing starts at $1.69 for the industrial version in 1,000-unit quantities, and $1.99 for the automotive version in 1,000-unit quantities.
Developers can easily evaluate their products using the ISO1042DWEVM and ISO1042DWVEVM evaluation modules. Both evaluation modules are available from the TI store and authorized distributors, and are both priced at $49.
Meanwhile, TI will demonstrate the interoperability of various isolated CAN-based systems, including ISO1042, at electronica 2018, held at Messe Munich, Germany, from the 13th to the 16th.
