Electric two-wheeled vehicle distribution and expansion, market activation policy 'essential conditions' met
LG Energy Solution has become the first domestic company to receive subsidy support for battery swapping stations (BSS). It has become the 'first company' to meet the standard requirements for the electric two-wheeled vehicle distribution project promoted by the government, including the Ministry of Environment.
LG Energy Solution announced on the 31st that it was the first in Korea to receive the KS (National Standard) certification issued by the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTC) in the 'BSS (Battery Swapping Station)' and 'Electric Two-Wheel Vehicle Swappable Battery Pack' categories.
By meeting the 'essential conditions' of the government support policy being promoted to popularize and expand electric two-wheeled vehicles and activate the battery subscription service market, it is now possible to expect effects such as subsidy benefits.
In fact, the Ministry of Environment announced the finalization of the “2025 Electric Motorcycle Distribution Project Subsidy Work Processing Guidelines” and the “2025 Electric Motorcycle Battery Swapping Charging Facility Installation Subsidy Project Operation Guidelines” on the 17th of last month, stating that “installation costs will not be supported for battery swapping charging facilities that do not meet national standards.”
The KS official certification items that LG Energy Solution acquired this time are a total of four items related to △electrical and mechanical specifications, communication protocols, performance, stability, durability, etc. of interchangeable battery packs △battery exchangeable charging facilities, etc.
LG Energy Solution stated that it is true that inefficiency due to different products and standards by manufacturer in the battery-swappable electric two-wheeled vehicle market has been a chronic problem that has hindered market growth, and that by being the first domestic company to obtain national standard requirements, it will be able to further enhance its competitiveness in the standardization market promoted by the government.
The domestic electric motorcycle market is considered a market with high growth potential. In particular, as the delivery culture spread during the COVID-19 pandemic, problems such as noise and exhaust fumes from internal combustion engine motorcycles became widespread, and electric motorcycles, which are effective in reducing air pollution and noise, emerged as an alternative.
According to the '2024 Motorcycle Usage Report Status' by the Korea Electric Motorcycle Association (KEMS), the current number of internal combustion engine and electric motorcycles registered in Korea is approximately 2.2 million, and the number of registered motorcycles in 2024 will reach approximately 110,000. In addition, according to the 'Status of Electric Motorcycles and Battery Swapping Charging Facilities' of the Ministry of Environment, the number of battery-swappable electric motorcycles has more than doubled from 1,654 units in 2023 to 3,429 units in 2024, and the number of charging facilities will reach a total of 1,872 nationwide.
The Ministry of Environment announced that it will provide a total of 16 billion won in purchase subsidies with the goal of distributing 20,000 electric motorcycles this year and 5 billion won to support the installation of 500 charging facilities.
LG Energy Solution plans to work with the government to vitalize the domestic electric two-wheeled vehicle exchangeable battery market with this certification. In addition, it plans to participate in the National Standards Technology Improvement Project R&D project with the Korea Automobile Research Institute and Kangwon National University to ensure that the KS standard is reflected in the global market, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
LG Energy Solution's battery exchange service KooRoo is currently building about 440 stations nationwide. In the future, it plans to expand nationwide, focusing on major metropolitan cities such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju, as well as the metropolitan area.
Additionally, we plan to ensure that batteries are safely managed throughout their entire life cycle through B.around, a total battery management solution.
