Resistors, an essential element in electronic product design
You need to know the resistance tolerance and nominal resistance to use a resistor.
ROHM has 16 resistor lineups, adding more

Recently, as electronic products become more high-performance, power-efficient, and miniaturized, the PCB size is becoming smaller and more compact. The automotive and automation sectors are leading this trend.

The proportion of electrical components installed in automobiles is increasing day by day, and the number of factories introducing Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions is increasing. Automobile and automation solutions have severe installation space constraints, and are also exposed to high and low temperatures and severe vibrations. Accordingly, reliability that guarantees smooth operation even in harsh places is required for PCBs.

Smooth PCB operation is related to efficient use of power. Components on the PCB have different operating voltages. If the input voltage is lower than the operating voltage, the component will not operate. On the other hand, if the input voltage is higher, excessive current will flow and cause failure. At this time, a resistor is needed to control the flow of current and ensure smooth operation of the component.

We asked Park Cheol, a senior researcher in charge of technical support for discrete products at ROHM Semiconductor Korea Technical Center, about trends in the resistor market and the knowledge about resistors that engineers must know when designing electronic product circuits.

Q. What are the uses of resistors in electronic products, and what are their types and structures?

A. Resistors are used for current regulation to limit current, voltage division to divide voltage, and current sensing, which is in increasing demand recently. Types of resistors include general resistors, special resistors, and shunt resistors. Resistors are passive components, and consist of a resistor that determines the basic resistance value, a coating that protects the resistor, and an electrode.

Q. Among the terms related to resistance, what are the 'resistance tolerance' and 'nominal resistance' that will be covered in the webinar on June 17? Are there any other things related to resistors that I should know?

A. Resistance tolerance is the allowable error in the resistance value deviation that occurs during the process. For example, a tolerance of 1% means that a 100Ω (ohm) resistor has a deviation of 99 to 101Ω. Nominal resistance is a standard for resistance values established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Engineers who want to use resistors need to know the resistance value, power rating, and size of the resistor.

Q. What are the recent market demands for resistors and what is ROHM’s response?

A. Resistors are essential components used in all circuits, and the market is looking for highly reliable resistors that are resistant to external factors such as high temperature, low temperature, and vibration. Representative requirements include the electric field standard AEC-Q and the US military standard MIL.

ROHM manufactures special resistors that the market demands by changing the internal structure of the resistor, etc. In addition, we have a diverse lineup of resistors to respond to the miniaturization and high power of electronic products, and we are continuously developing new products.

Q. What is ROHM’s resistor lineup?

A. ROHM has 16 resistor lineups. First, for current detection chip resistors, there are the high-power ultra-low resistance 'PSR' series, high-power low-resistance 'GMR' series, long-terminal electrode products 'PML' series, terminal and thick-film long-terminal electrode products 'LTR/LHR' series, ultra-low resistance 'PMR' series for current detection, and low resistance 'UCR' series for current detection.

The following high-reliability type chip resistors are available: △High-reliability long terminal electrode LTR series, △High-voltage withstand chip resistor KTR series, △Sulfuration-resistant chip resistor SFR series, △High surge protection chip resistor SDR series, △Surge protection chip resistor ESR series, △Ultra-low resistance chip jumper resistor 'PMR-JPW' series. In addition, as general-purpose type chip resistors, there are △'MCR' series which encompasses small square chip resistors and △low-resistance general-purpose chip resistors, △'MNR' series chip network resistors, and additionally, ultra-small square chip resistors 'RASMID™'.

Q. What are ROHM’s future goals in the resistor market?

A. Currently, ROHM is responding to the needs of various markets including the consumer electronics market, and among them, we are targeting the automotive market and industrial equipment market in particular. In the future, ROHM will respond to market needs by improving the quality of resistors and expanding its lineup to increase its share of the global resistor market.

Essential elements for circuit design, basic knowledge about resistors, and precautions for use will be covered in the ROHM webinar to be held on Thursday the 17th at 10:30 AM.
