Onsemi to expand silicon carbide (SiC) wafer production capacity by up to 16 times by 2024
Silicon carbide (SiC) is essential for realizing the efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs), EV charging, and energy infrastructure, and is emerging as an important element that can contribute to decarbonization practices, and many companies are focusing their efforts on related fields.
Onsemi announced on the 22nd that it held an event to celebrate the completion of expansion work at its silicon carbide (SiC) plant in Roznov, Czech Republic. The event was attended by high-ranking local government officials, including Zbyněk Pokorný, Director General of the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, Radim Holiš, Governor of Zlín Province, and Jiří Pavlica, Mayor of the Czech Republic, as well as many other distinguished guests.
Since 2019, Onsemi has added production of SiC polished wafers and SiC epitaxy wafers to its existing polished silicon epitaxy (EPI) wafer and die manufacturing processes in Rozunov. The company began reconstruction of a new building last year to further expand wafer and SiC EPI manufacturing at its existing site.
ON Semi expects this expansion to increase its SiC production capacity in Rozunov by 16-fold by the end of 2024 and create 200 new jobs. To date, ON Semi has invested more than $150 million in the Rozunov site, with plans to spend an additional $300 million by 2023. ON Semi recently received an award from the Association for Foreign Investments (AFI) for its contributions to the Czech SiC sector.
“With the expansion of our SiC production in Hudson, NH, and our enhanced SiC manufacturing capabilities, ON Semiconductor is confident that we can support our customers’ rapidly growing demand for SiC-based solutions,” said Simon Keeton, vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor’s Power Solutions Group. “ON Semiconductor’s commitment to control and deliver products across the SiC manufacturing supply chain further demonstrates ON Semi’s progress as a leader in SiC.”
