Vision to nurture 150,000 young semiconductor talents by 2031
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and other related ministries will form a single team to accelerate the training of future semiconductor talents, which is a key task and key to success of the 'Semiconductor Mega Cluster Creation Plan' announced on the 15th.
On the 15th, the government announced a plan to promptly supply specialized manpower to meet the demand for semiconductor manpower through the ‘Semiconductor Mega Cluster Creation Plan.’
△Through educational programs such as the semiconductor contract department and contract quota system, semiconductor specialized universities (from 8 to 18 schools), and semiconductor academy (to train 800 people by 2024), we aim to train approximately 30,000 bachelor's-level practical talents by 2024.
In addition, we will expand R&D-based human resource development courses such as △AI Semiconductor Graduate School (Seoul National University, KAIST, Hanyang University, 90 students to be selected in 2024) and △Semiconductor Specialization Graduate School (3 → 6 schools), and train approximately 3,700 advanced talents at the master's and doctoral level.
The My Chip service, which provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to create chips of their own design, is expected to expand six-fold (to 600 people in 2024) compared to 2023. We are promoting the development of talents closely related to the field.
As part of the follow-up measures for the 3rd People’s Livelihood Discussion, on the 25th, Kang Kyung-sung, 1st Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, and related ministries including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and ICT visited the Semiconductor Specialized Graduate School of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, a site for nurturing semiconductor talent, and listened to the difficulties faced by young talent.
First Vice Minister Kang Kyung-sung said, “What is most important in maintaining the ultra-gap in our semiconductor industry are the young talents present here, and the government is working to foster 150,000 excellent young talents in the semiconductor field by 2031,” emphasizing, “The government will continue to work as one team to provide unsparing support to our youth.”
