Microchip Adds ASA Motion Link to Ethernet/PCIe
Microchip is expanding its automotive semiconductor portfolio by acquiring domestic fabless startup VSI.
Microchip Technology Inc. announced today that it has acquired VSI, an automotive semiconductor company headquartered in Seoul, Korea.
VSI is a fabless company providing high-speed asymmetric camera, sensor, and display connectivity technology and products based on the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA) specification, an open standard for in-vehicle networking (IVN).
According to French IT market research firm Yole Group, the market size of automotive radar, camera, and LiDAR modules is expected to more than double from 2022 to 2028, generating sales of $27 billion.
These growth expectations are driven by the growing adoption of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), in-cabin monitoring, safety and convenience features such as 360-degree surround view and electronic mirrors, and multi-screen digital cockpits for next-generation SDVs. Because it exists.
“This acquisition adds VSI’s unmatched technical support, market traction and ASA Motion Link technology and products to Microchip’s broad automotive networking portfolio,” said Mitch Obolsky, senior vice president of Microchip’s Automotive Products, Networking and Data Center business unit. “This acquisition allows us to better serve the ADAS megatrends we are driving.”
“Camera and display connectivity is the fastest-growing segment of the IVN market as the industry consolidates around three key IVN axes—Ethernet, PCIe® and ASA Motion Link,” said Obolski. “With VSI, Microchip can provide customers with solutions for automotive security, microcontroller, motor control, touch and power management that enable the next generation of SDA architectures.”
“VSI is a leader in ASA-ML product development and was first to market, and our chipsets are recognized by automakers worldwide as standards-compliant products,” said Steve Kang, CEO of VSI. “We recently worked with BMW to demonstrate that our ASA-ML product is market-ready through a proof of concept (POC), and we look forward to this acquisition as we move forward with the successful adoption of our solutions in automotive production.”
