Collaboration between assembly and test partners, currently utilizing recycled plastic parts packaging reels
Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless IoT connectivity solutions, today announced that it has achieved another important milestone in its sustainability strategy by joining the first group of semiconductor companies to use component reels made from recycled plastic.
Switching to recycled plastic could reduce plastic waste by around 15,000 kg per year.
“We are constantly looking for ways to minimize our impact on the environment,” says Ole-Fredrik Morken, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Nordic Semiconductor. “We are delighted to have achieved this milestone in collaboration with our trusted OSAT partners,” said Mr. A. S. Nordic, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Semiconductor Electronics. “This is especially important as Nordic customers are some of the world’s largest consumers of semiconductor chips for wireless IoT connectivity, building hundreds of millions of devices with Nordic components embedded in them every year.”
As the Internet of Things (IoT) market grows, the volume of these chips consumed in applications such as smart homes, healthcare, asset tracking, professional lighting, building automation, smart agriculture, utility meters, wireless audio, and retail will also increase significantly.
“This will be a small but important contribution to sustainability,” says Geir Langeland, Nordic Semiconductor’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Given the market potential of IoT applications that Nordic is leading in, such as AI and machine learning, we expect to soon be supplying billions of devices per year.”
Currently, the majority of Nordic’s component packaging reels are made from recycled plastic waste. To achieve this milestone, Nordic has been able to meet all industry standards for component tapes and reels by conducting tests on recycled plastic component reels and ensuring that they perform reliably and reliably as well as conventional non-recycled reels. This means that the packages are not damaged during shipment, protecting Nordic’s valuable semiconductor components while ensuring a smooth supply of components to high-speed PCB placement machines.
“Nordic customers are using recycled plastic parts reels in their production processes without any problems,” says Ole-Fredrik Morken. “Nordic is committed to implementing our Green Talk for carbon neutrality in terms of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). There are many industry standards and minimum best practice regulations that semiconductor chip suppliers must follow to minimize their impact on the environment. However, climate change and the environment are such important issues that minimum standards alone are not enough. We need to go beyond these standards and do our part for the environment. Nordic is doing that with this work.”
