LG Electronics DMS Embedded in Ambarella SoC
Scheduled to be unveiled at CES 2025, targeting the automotive industry
As the global automobile market continues to raise vehicle safety standards, in-cabin sensing technology that prevents accidents is also receiving more attention. Automakers are considering in-cabin sensing as an important item in automobile safety evaluations, so rapid market growth and technological advancement are expected in the future.
LG Electronics announced on the 5th that it will present a solution that further improves the performance of 'in-cabin sensing' in collaboration with American AI semiconductor company Ambarella.
LG Electronics has installed its advanced Driver Monitoring System (DMS) on Ambarella's 'Edge AI System on Chip'.
Ambarella's system-on-chip integrates various functions required for the system, such as sensing and computation, into the chip, and is an edge AI method that processes data in real time on a local device without going through the cloud. It reduces costs by implementing a system-integrated design.
LG Electronics will supply high-performance DMS solutions equipped on the Ambarella system-on-chip, which has particular strengths in high-resolution image processing, to global automobile customers. This DMS solution will be unveiled at the Ambarella booth set up separately in Las Vegas, USA during CES 2025 next year.
LG Electronics' in-cabin sensing is a solution that detects and analyzes the inside of a vehicle using cameras and sensors to prevent traffic accidents. It uses cameras to precisely detect and analyze the driver's gaze and head movements. If careless behavior, such as drowsy driving or using a cell phone while driving, occurs, it sounds an alarm to protect the safety of the driver, passengers, and pedestrians.
LG Electronics is continuously advancing in-cabin sensing technology to provide differentiated customer experiences. In October, it signed a business agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation Road Traffic Research Institute to cooperate in the development of next-generation in-cabin sensing solutions through extreme driving tests using a road driving simulator.
LG Electronics and Ambarella plan to continue their partnership to provide automakers with in-cabin sensing solutions that meet enhanced safety assessment standards such as NCAP.
According to market research firm Roland Berger, the global ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) market size, which includes in-cabin sensing, front cameras, and radar, is expected to grow from $25.3 billion in 2025 to $53.2 billion in 2030.
“The collaboration with LG Electronics is meaningful in that it provides solutions that enable global automakers to achieve industry-leading vehicle safety levels,” said Fermi Wang, President and CEO of Ambarella.
“LG Electronics will take the lead in improving vehicle safety by working with key partners, including Ambarella, to present new safety standards for in-cabin sensing solutions,” said Eun Seok-hyun, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics’ Vehicle Sensing Business Division.
