한화시스템이 원웹과 국내 서비스 개시를 위한 ‘저궤도 위성통신 유통·공급 계약(Distribution Partnership Agreement)’을 체결했다.
Cross-border supply agreement approval begins, space internet domestic service procedures begin
Hanwha Systems (CEO Sung-chul Eo) is promoting a low-orbit satellite communication business with OneWeb, and is set to provide smooth, uninterrupted communications in islands and mountainous areas with poor infrastructure, and in emergency situations such as natural disasters and geopolitical crises.
Hanwha Systems announced on the 23rd that it signed a 'Distribution Partnership Agreement' with OneWeb for the launch of domestic services.
Through this contract, Hanwha Systems will visualize the provision of ultra-high-speed Internet using OneWeb’s low-orbit communication network and take steps to obtain approval for the government’s Cross-Border Provision.
Satellite communication networks used in each country are made up of satellite frequencies and orbits, and are secured through international registration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In the case of using overseas satellite networks, since satellite communication services are mainly used for communication, navigation, and observation, cross-border supply approval from our government must be obtained to prevent national security threats such as communication waves crossing into North Korea.
Hanwha Systems is currently promoting its participation in the 'Commercial Low-Earth Orbit Satellite-Based Communication System' project to secure a 'space internet' network by utilizing OneWeb's satellite network, and is preparing to supply a B2B satellite communication service that will allow stable 24-hour 'space internet' service from low-orbit satellites by installing a 'satellite communication antenna' in remote areas and at sea and in the air where internet access is difficult.
Hanwha Systems completed its registration as a basic telecommunications business operator with the Ministry of Science and ICT in July, and plans to submit a cross-border supply agreement to the Ministry of Science and ICT by the end of this month, attaching the OneWeb distribution and supply contract.
Kim Jeong-ho, head of the aerospace business division at Hanwha Systems, said, “We are prioritizing the development of a low-orbit communication network for the government,” and added, “Hanwha Systems’ ‘Space Internet’ service will provide smooth, uninterrupted communications in areas with poor infrastructure, such as islands and mountainous regions, and in emergency situations such as natural disasters and geopolitical crises, and its utility will shine.”
Meanwhile, OneWeb completed the merger and acquisition (M&A) process with Eutelsat of France, one of the world's top three satellite communication companies, on September 28 and changed its name to Eutelsat OneWeb. Eutelsat, which has a large geostationary orbit (GEO) satellite business, is expected to further expand its market through the acquisition of OneWeb's low earth orbit (LEO) satellite business.
