The world's first successful commercialization in 1996, laying the foundation for an information and communications powerhouse
A domestic research team announced that the world's first commercialized code division multiple access (CDMA) technology in 1996 was listed on Milestone, hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a world-renowned organization.
With this, our country's technology has been recognized for its historical achievements in contributing to human society and industrial development for the first time by a world-class association.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 11th that, together with SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and LG Electronics, it has registered 'CDMA commercialization technology' in the IEEE milestone for the first time in Korea's technological history.
The IEEE Milestones Program is a program of the IEEE that recognizes and commemorates significant technical achievements in the fields of electrical, electronic, and computing that have contributed to humanity.
Application for registration with IEEE is possible only after 25 years from the occurrence of the achievement, and this is the first time in history that Korea has registered its CDMA commercialization technology in the IEEE milestone, so it is very meaningful.
The Korean government, through a government-led, ETRI-centered industry-academia-research cooperation system, developed the Telecommunication Digital Exchange (TDX) in 1986 based on its experience developing the system in 1988 and promoted research and development for four years until 1992, centered on ETRI. />
As the importance of mobile communication development was increasingly recognized during the promotion of research and development, the government established a plan for the development of digital mobile communication in 1989 and promoted research and development for seven years from 1990 to 1996.
ETRI led the project, and Samsung Electronics, Goldstar Information & Communication (now LG Electronics), Hyundai Electronics, and Maxon Electronics participated as manufacturers.
As a telecommunications company, SKT was listed as a joint research institute.
The project was carried out on a nationwide basis to develop a digital mobile communications system.
The impact of CDMA commercialization technology on our country's industry is that our country has advanced from the periphery of the world to the center in the field of mobile communications.
In other words, after going through the difficult process of the 1990s, we became a powerhouse in information and communications by commercializing CDMA for the first time in the world.
The successful commercialization of 2nd generation CDMA technology laid the foundation for our country to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's leading countries in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation mobile communications.
On the 11th, ETRI held a related commemorative ceremony and invited current and former researchers who participated in the development of CDMA technology to the event.
The event began with a welcoming speech by ETRI President Bang Seung-chan, followed by congratulatory remarks by former Minister of Information and Communication Yang Seung-taek and Soamsystel Chairman Park Hang-gu, followed by an introduction to the history of CDMA development by Professor Han Yeong-nam and a viewing of a related video.
Afterwards, a plaque commemorating the listing of the CDMA commercialization technology IEEE milestone was unveiled at the Hall of Fame in Building 7 of ETRI.
In addition, ETRI concluded the event schedule by having attendees tour the ETRI History Museum, which was opened to the public for the first time in April.
The commemorative plaque received this time will be permanently preserved in the ETRI History Museum.
ETRI Bang SeungPresident Chan said, “This IEEE milestone listing can be seen as the first case in which our research team’s commercialization of CDMA technology has been recognized by an advanced country. It is a great feat that our research team’s outstanding research achievements and contributions have been greatly praised by researchers around the world.”
ETRI is working hard to create new opportunities by focusing on the development of 6G technology, the next-generation communication technology.
