Elected 8 members including ITU-R SG5 Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of Study Group
The Ministry of Science and ICT's National Radio Research Agency announced on the 24th that at the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) Radio Management Study Group (SG1) international conference held in Geneva, Switzerland on the 20th, President Jeong Yong-jun of the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association was elected as vice-chairman, successfully achieving the largest number of positions held by the ITU Radiocommunication Sector in history.
This is the first time that the chairman of the Terrestrial Telecommunications Study Group (SG5) has been elected at the ITU-R Study Group Meeting, including the Radiocommunication Assembly held last year, and all the study groups that were nominated have successfully advanced to the chair.
Wi Gyu-jin, a specialist from the Korea Radio Promotion Association, was elected as the Chairman of SG5, and a total of eight people were elected: △Park Jong-min from the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute as the Vice-Chairman of the WRC-27 Preparatory Group (CPM-27); △Lim Jae-woo, a researcher from the Radio Research Institute, as the Vice-Chairman of the Radio Communication Advisory Group (RAG); △Kim Jong-ho, a specialist from the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, as the Vice-Chairman of the Radio Propagation Research Group (SG3); △Oh Dae-seop from the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, as the Vice-Chairman of the Satellite Research Group (SG4); △Lee Cheol-hee, a professor from Yonsei University, as the Vice-Chairman of the Broadcasting Research Group (SG6); and △Lee Hwang-jae, a specialist from SyncTechno, as the Vice-Chairman of the Science Research Group (SG7).
With this, for the first time since the ITU began its activities, our country has secured the chairpersonship in all eight research groups of the ITU-R sector, including the chairperson, and this is the result of cooperation between experts from domestic industry, academia, research, and government. It was evaluated that this was the result of all ITU-R study groups proactively promoting international standardization activities.
Through this, they have secured a leading position to lead the discussion on the operation and agenda setting of each research group. The elected chairpersons of each research group will proactively promote the core tasks of the research group during the research period leading up to the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27) to be held in 2027.
The main topics of discussion include: △Standardization of the 6G international standard, IMT-2030, and frequency exploration; △Study on spectrum availability assessment and prediction; △Study on radio propagation in the 100㎓ or higher band; △Standardization of satellite IMT-2020; △Study on wireless LAN (RLAN) system characteristics; and △Standardization of new broadcasting service models.
Kim Hee-won, Acting Director of the National Radio Research Agency, said, “It is very encouraging that our country’s standards experts in the field of radio communications have achieved the greatest number of chair positions ever on the international stage,” and added, “We will continue to make active efforts to ensure that ITU standards experts, including chair positions, can take the lead in international standardization.”
Meanwhile, in order to systematically respond to ITU international standardization activities, the Radio Research Institute has established and is operating the 'Korea ITU Research Committee' and is supporting various standardization activities so that Korea's excellent ICT technologies can be adopted as international standards and lead the global advancement of domestic companies.
