Promoting international standards reflecting 3GPP's developed 6G core technologies
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has succeeded in demonstrating a 200Gbps wireless link for the first time in the world, advancing the era of 6G mobile communications.
ETRI announced on the 23rd that it had developed a 6G mobile communication proof-of-concept (PoC) system and successfully demonstrated it late last year.
The 6G system developed by ETRI is equipped with multi-point transmission/reception wireless transmission technology that utilizes a wide bandwidth of 10 GHz in the ultra-high frequency (Sub THz) band.
Four base station radio units (RUs) simultaneously transmitted on the same frequency band, and the terminal utilized beamforming technology to minimize interference and achieve a total transmission speed of over 200 Gbps.
Technology that allows four base stations to simultaneously transmit signals of the same band frequency and advanced beamforming technology were applied. This allowed data transfer speeds to be quadrupled.
The sub-terahertz (Sub THz) frequency band is expected to be used for small cells such as indoor picocells or for sensing due to its short radio transmission distance.
The PoC system used in the demonstration includes core 6G technologies such as multipoint transmission/reception technology, ultra-high frequency polarization multiple output (MIMO) technology, and large-capacity coding technology.
ETRI stated that this achievement was the result of efforts made in recognition of the importance of securing original technology and in collaboration with joint research institutes.
After establishing the 6G vision in early 2020, ETRI has been promoting international standardization based on it, including reflection of the ITU-R IMT-2030 (6G) framework.
We have also focused on securing core technologies through the government's 6G core source technology development project.
The research team plans to showcase key 6G technologies, including 200Gbps Sub-THz 6G technology, at MWC 2025 in Spain in early March.
Through this, ETRI plans to actively promote its latest 6G technology to the world.
ETRI will present its 6G technology view at 3GPP’s 6G technology workshop and will strive to lead global 6G standardization and industrialization in the future. It also plans to continue developing core 6G source technologies so that they can be reflected in international standards.
